Cozzi Picks up Fourth Win, Falcons Split Doubleheader at Delta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  The University of Montevallo baseball team split a doubleheader to Delta State, 2-0, and 10-14, Saturday in Cleveland, Mississippi.
 
Gino Cozzi was lights out for the Falcons in his start on the mound in game two. He threw 7.0 innings with five strikeouts, no runs allowed, and just five hits. Cozzi set the tone and allowed the UM offense to lift the Falcons to a win.
 
The bats were hot for both sides in game two of the doubleheader, but a 16-11 advantage in hits aided the Statesman to a win over UM, 14-10.

A dominant performance on the mound from Gino Cozzi helped the Falcons respond in game two of the series. Cozzi through 7.0 scoreless innings and struck out five.
 
After Cozzi's fifth scoreless inning, the Falcons offered some run support when Daniel Irizarry scored on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 2-0 for the Falcons in the eighth when Logan Harbin blasted his third homer of the year.
 
Chris Foster replaced Cozzi after seven scoreless frames and finished out the game with no runs or hits allowed, and four strikeouts.
 
Cozzi earned his fourth win of the year on the mound and Foster added his first save.

  • Gino Cozzi moved to 4-1 as he threw 7.0 scoreless innings and struck out five.
  • Chris Foster recorded his first save and finished with four strikeouts and no runs or hits allowed.
  • Logan Harbin drove in the lone run as he finished 1-for-4 with a homer.
  • Connor Crowson, Evan Liddie, Zen Hiatt, and Jackson Norris  each joined Harbin with a hit.
  • Montevallo scored two runs on five hits.
  • Delta State was shutout on five hits.

After a low-scoring pitchers duel in game one of the doubleheader, game two featured a pair of high-powered offensive performances. Delta State finished with 14 runs on 16 hits while the Falcons tallied 10 runs on 11 hits.

The first run came across for the Falcons in the top of the first when Evan Lidde scored on a passed ball.

The lead went to 2-0 for the Falcons in the second when Connor Crowson singled through the right side.

Delta State offense came alive in the bottom of the second with six runs to jump ahead of UM, 6-2.

With one more in the third and a four spot in the fourth, Montevallo trailed 11-2. In the top of the fifth, Montevallo trimmed the DSU lead to five, 11-6, with a four-spot of their own. It began with a Crowson homer, followed by an RBI single for Landon Leake and a home run for Barry Eiseman.

DSU's offense stayed relentless with two more in the fifth to lead 13-6.

After giving up one more run to the Statesman in the sixth, the Falcons hoped for a comeback in the seventh with four runs. Landon Leake drove in Harbin with a double before Christian Kallaher added an RBI. Montevallo scored two more in the frame and trimmed the lead to five.

  • Logan Samuels led the way with a dominant start on the mound. He threw 5.0 innings
  • Christian Kallaher was 3-of-4 on the day with one run driven in.
  • Landon Leake was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI's
  • Crowson also finished 3-for-4 from the plate.
  • Barry Eiseman hit a two-run homer for the Falcons.
