Falcons Take Dominant Win Over Malone

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's lacrosse returned to the win column with a dominant 21-6 win over Malone on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Montevallo drew first blood with a goal from Claire Withington in the opening 38 seconds before Kiley Shea scored her 15th goal of the season at the 11:48 mark. Montevallo's Mikaela Barbieri tallied her first goal of the day before Withington added a second goal quickly after. Withington's first-quarter hat trick lifted the Falcons to a 5-0 lead with 5:54 to go. Jenna Piazza stretched Montevallo's lead to six before Withington scored a fourth goal in the opening quarter to lift the Falcons to a 7-0 lead. Malone cracked into the scoring column at the 3:04 before Shea's second goal of the quarter saw Montevallo lead 8-1. Piazza added tallied her second free-position goal with just over a minute to play. In the final 36 seconds of the quarter, Withington added her fifth goal before freshman Ellery Shearer gave the Falcons an 11-1 lead heading into the second. 
 
Barbieri opened the second quarter scoring at the 13:27 mark before adding another goal just over four minutes later. Piazza's third goal of the game gave the Falcons a 14-1 lead with 8:00 left in the half. Shearer added Montevallo's 15th first-half goal for the highest scoring half this season. The second-quarter scoring ended with a Malone goal at the 2:34 mark to send the game into the half with a 15-2 Montevallo lead. 
 
Montevallo struck first in the third quarter with Shea's third goal of the afternoon followed by Chloe Norman's fourth goal of the season to give the Falcons a 17-2 lead. Mackenzie Griffin tallied her first save of the night at the 7:53 mark as both offenses went cold. Malone ended a seven-minute scoring drought with a free position goal at the 3:47 mark. Junior Lily Moats scored her first goal of the season with 2:21 left in the quarter before Griffin closed the third with a third save. 
 
Ally Rich found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter with just 34 seconds off the clock. Another Pioneer free-position goal cut Montevallo's lead to 19-4 with 12:54 to play. Sophomore Aleena Edwards found her first goal of the season with 9:28 left. Malone scored two unanswered goals over the next two minutes to trim the Falcons' advantage down to 20-6. With less than a minute to play, Trinity Rose scored the final goal of the day to give the Falcons a 21-6 win over Malone.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st | Montevallo sophomore Claire Withington scored five goals in the opening quarter as Montevallo outshot the Pioneers 13-4 in the first 15 minutes. Montevallo controlled the draws in the first quarter with an 8-4 advantage on draw controls. 
2nd | The Falcons' offense slowed down in the second quarter with four goals with Mikaela Barbieri scoring two goals early in the quarter. The Falcons tallied nine shots to two shots from Malone while owning a 4-2 lead in draw controls. 
3rd | Montevallo outscored the Pioneers 3-1 in the third quarter as Malone tallied four shots to Montevallo's three. With both sides going 1-for-1 on free-position goals, Montevallo held a 18-3 lead heading to the fourth. 
4th | A pair of Falcons found their first goals of the season with Aleena Edwards and Trinity Rose finding their way into the book. Despite being outscored 2-0 in free-position goals in the final quarter, Montevallo walked away with a 21-6 victory. 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Claire Withington's seven points on the day are the most points from a Falcon in a single game this season. Withington's seven points came on five goals and two assists. 
  • Mikaela Barbieri, Jenna Piazza, and Kiley Shea each tallied three goals on the night with Barbieri and Piazza adding a pair of assists for five points on the day. 
  • Montevallo outshot the Pioneers 28-16 on the day with the Falcons taking a 21-11 advantage in shots on target. 
  • Montevallo recorded five saves while Malone was unable to stop a Falcon shot on goal.
