Women's Lacrosse Opens Conference Play With A Loss To Lander

Box Score Greenwood, S.C. – Montevallo women's lacrosse open's conference with a loss to Lander.


The Bearcats came out strong, scoring the first three goals of the game juts 1:24 into the game. There was a bit of a lull until Kiley Shea score the first goal for the Falcons with 10:57 left in the quarter. Lander picked up three more scores before Ellery Shearer's first goal of the game at the 5:34 mark. The Bearcats put in another goal in the final 30 seconds of the period to bring the score to 2-7.
 
The second quarter started with Lander rattling off six straight goals. Claire Withington scored the only goal of the period for the Falcons with 1:33 to go. The Bearcats scored at the buzzer pushing the scored to 3-14
 
The Falcons commanded the third quarter scoring three goals in a row. Jenna Piazza, Trinity Rose and Christina Banas put a goal in the stat sheet at the 7:39, 5:57 and 4:38 marks in the quarter. Lander was held scoreless until 2:24 left, before they picked up two more goals. The end of the period came and the score showed 6-16.
 
The final period of the game started with a Lander goal at the 13:32 mark, followed by Jenna Piazza's second of the game with 11:40 to go. The Falcons were shutout the rest of the game, and allowed another three goals. The buzzer sounded and the scored was finalized at 7-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
1st | The Falcons fell behind early, giving up three goals before Shea was able to put one into the back of the net. UM allowed another three goals before Shearer scored the second goal of the game.
2nd | Montevallo scored just one goal in the second period on only two shot attempts.
3rd | The Falcons put together a solid third quarter, outscoring and outshooting Lander 3-2 and 6-4 respectively. UM picked up six ground balls and four draw controls.
4th | Montevallo faced 10 shots, giving up four goals and having four saves. The lone goal for the Falcons came from a free position attempt by Piazza
GAME NOTES 
  • The Falcons scored seven goals on 13 shots.
  • Montevallo's goalkeepers had eight saves, compared to the five from Lander
  • UM won the third quarter in shots, goals, ground balls and draw controls.
  • The Falcons were outshot 32-13 on the day.
