MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In game one of a pivotal Gulf South Conference series with West Florida, Montevallo snapped a five-game losing skid with a 4-1 victory.
Montevallo returned to the win column with a dominant showing at the plate, on the mound and in the field.
Adiel Melendez provided stability on the mound for the Falcons with four scoreless frames to begin and just one run on seven hits with five punchouts through six and two-thirds.
After a pitchers' duel through four innings, West Florida reached the scoring column first with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, Montevallo answered the UWF bats with a ground-out RBI from
Mitchell Walker to even the score 1-1.
Melendez added a scoreless sixth inning for the Falcons with a three up, three down frame. The lefty starter set the table for a three-run bottom half of the inning that would push the Falcons ahead. The three-spot began with an RBI single from
Logan Harbin to give Montevallo a 2-1 advantage.
Jake O'Connell then launched his sixth homer of the year into the trees in right field to push the lead to 4-1.
In the seventh Melendez recorded two more outs before handing the ball to freshman
Zach Wyatt. The righty reliever recorded a punch out to end the frame and struck out the side in the eighth. Wyatt struck out for consecutive batters and held UWF off the board, paving the way for closer Chirs Foster in the ninth.
Foster picked up his sixth save of the year, throwing just 10 pitches in the ninth.
Melendez picked up the win and moved to 3-2 overall on the year.
