BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2024 Spring All-Academic teams and the Spring Honor Roll, Thursday, June 13, with a conference-leading 174 making the list.
The University of Montevallo had five make the All-Academic team and a conference-leading 174 on the honor roll. Baseball, men's golf, women's golf and women's lacrosse each earned All-Academic selections with women's lacrosse leading the way with two.
Men's Outdoor Track and Field led the way on the honor roll for the Falcons with 35 honorees.
Luke Mitchell, a junior on the Montevallo baseball team, earned a spot of the All-Academic Team. Mitchell, a native of LeHigh Acres, Florida, has earned a 3.595 cumulative grade-point-average as an Exercise and Nutrition Science major. Mitchell was a preseason All-GSC and All-Region selection. In 2024 he batted .228 from the plate and drove in seven runs.
Harrison Hughston was named to the Men's Golf All-Academic squad after an impressive 2024 campaign on the course and in the classroom. The graduate student posted a 3.60 graduate GPA in the MBA program and held a 3.75 GPA as an undergrad. In 2024, Hughston finished tied-second at the Gulf South Conference Championships and tied seventh at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional tournament – the highest finish in program history. He was named an All-GSC honoree as well.
Paulina Bermejo earned a spot on the Women's Golf All-Academic team as she holds a 4.00 cumulative GPA. The junior is pursuing a degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science. In 2024, she was named the GSC Champion Scholar Athlete and earned a spot on the All-GSC Second Team following a top-10 finish at the conference tournament.
Women's Lacrosse led the way for Montevallo with two All-Academic honorees. Junior Jenna Piazza and sophomore Claire Withington each earned a spot on the team. Piazza, a psychology major, holds a 3.84 GPA while Withington has a 4.0 as a Chemistry major. Withington led the Falcons with 14 assists while scoring 20 goals. Piazza added 22 goals and nine assists on the year.
All spring teams featured multiple student-athletes on the honor roll with a total of 174 for the Falcons – the most in the GSC. Men's Outdoor Track and Field led UM with 35 on the honor roll.
In order to qualify for the honor roll, student-athletes must achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have competed against outside competition in the spring semester. Nominees for the All-Academic team must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and participate in a majority of the teams' contests.
