Falcons Take Down Eagles 4-2 in Home Opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team opened the 2024 homestand with a 4-2 win over Carson-Newman on Wednesday evening.

The Falcons attacked early and often throughout the first half, helping UM control the game. Joshua Owens fired the first shot of the game three minutes in. Less than a minute later, Mark Shoebridge would find Cristobal Porter, who cashed in with his first goal as a Falcon.

Carson-Newman looked to respond, firing a shot during the 12th minute, but a Tomas Valles Gilbert save kept the Eagles off the board.

The Falcons found the net again in the 17th minute, as Jens Krieger connected with Joshua Owens to give UM a 2-0 advantage.

Both teams traded possessions and shots throughout the rest of the half, but neither would connect. The 12-5 advantage in shots (4-2 shots on goal) illustrated the dominance of the Falcons in the first 45 minutes. UM took the 2-0 lead into the break.

Carson-Newman finally entered the scoring column with a goal in the 67th minute, cutting the Falcon lead to 2-1. The Eagles looked to even the score in the 72nd minute, but another save by Valles kept Montevallo in front. The Falcons goalie recorded a season-high five saves in the game.

Montevallo responded a minute later with its third goal of the day. Cristobal Porter added to his solid day, this time assisting on a goal scored by Branko Buljan Ivelich. Buljan Ivelich's first goal of the season gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

Both teams would score again, as the Falcons scored on a C-N own goal in the 84th minute, and the Eagles found the net in the 87th minute.

Montevallo held on in the final minutes to preserve the 4-2 victory. The Falcons remain unbeaten with a 2-0-1 overall record.
