Volleyball Opens Up GSC Slate Against West Alabama

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team opens up Gulf South Conference play against in-state rival West Alabama on Tuesday, Sept. 24. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. CT inside Central State Bank Arena.
 
Last Time Out
The Falcons are coming off the GSC/PBC Crossover where they went 2-1 on their home court. In the opening day of the tournament, Montevallo defeated Lander in a five-set thriller. In the night cap, UM pulled off their first ranked win since 2003 as they knocked off No. 22 Augusta, 3-1. In the final match of the weekend, the Falcons fell to USC Aiken in four sets.

About Montevallo
Montevallo will come into Tuesday's match winners of their last three out of four matches. The Falcons were impressive last weekend as they had contributions from many different players. Nikol Antova has quickly emerged as one of the top offensive threats in the GSC with the second most kills with 124. Against Lander, Antova posted her second match this season where she had 21 kills. The following match against the No. 22 ranked Augusta Jaguars, she was just as impressive with a double-double of 17 kills-11 digs with a hit percentage of .308. Antova ended the weekend with her sixth match of 10 or more kills.
 
Ava Wind put together her best weekend as a Falcons with 63 digs and 15 assists. Wind had a career-high 26 dig match against Lander. The 26 digs are the second highest dig mark by anyone in the GSC so far this season. The freshman from Leander, Texas also put together a 24-dig match against No. 22 Augusta which is the fifth highest total in the conference. Wind is currently fifth among the GSC with 146 digs on the season.
 
On the biggest stage, Eliza Tyrrell had a coming out party where she put together a stat line of 17 kills, four digs and three service aces in the Falcons first ranked win since 2003. In the match, Tyrrell also had a career-high hitting percentage at .262 and it was her third consecutive match with three or more aces. The freshman from Madison, Alabama is eighth in the GSC with 14 aces.
 
Scouting West Alabama
The Tigers come in with a 1-8 record overall as they opened up the season against tough competition. West Alabama picked up their first win of the season in their most recent match on Thursday, Sept. 19 where they defeated Stillman in four sets. Jaida Alvin led the Tigers that match with 12 kills and she leads UWA with 62 kills on the season.
 
Taylor Lamontagne has the most assist for the Tiger with 105 while she adds seven aces. Defensively, Gracie Huver and Gracie Pierscinski both have over 10 total blocks on the season with 16 and 13, respectively.
 
West Alabama currently holds team to a .191 hitting percentage which is the fourth lowest in the Gulf South. As a team, they have been blocked the second lowest amount of times at 46.
