MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Saturday, as
Mark Shoebridge broke a scoreless tie in the 86
th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey to conclude the opening weekend in North Carolina.
Montevallo opened the game applying pressure, with
Sebastian Flores getting the first shot on goal in the fourth minute.
The Falcons continued to press offensively, firing the next three shots before the Crusaders finally recorded its first shot of the game in the eighth minute.
The first 45 minutes saw Montevallo control the pace with eight shots (four on goal) compared to Belmont Abbey's three shots (one on goal). Neither team could get a ball in the net, as the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Falcons came out of the break, continuing to apply pressure as
Dominic Kienzle fired a shot on goal 32 seconds into the second half. The Falcons followed that up with two more shots on goal in the following minutes, but the Crusaders keeper held strong in front of the goal.
Both teams traded possessions throughout the rest of the second half, with no one being able to break the scoreless tie.
The ball finally found its way into the net in the 86
th minute, as
Cristobal Porter found
Mark Shoebridge, who fired a shot that connected in the lower left corner to give the Falcons a late 1-0 lead.
Montevallo held on in the final minutes to secure its first victory of the 2024 season.
