Falcons Secure First GSC Road Win Behind Edwards Career-High; Defeats UWA, 70-60

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team overcame a slow start to earn its first GSC road win, defeating West Alabama 70-60 at Pruitt Hall on Saturday.

Lia Edwards led the way for the Falcons, notching a career-high 26 points, while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. Isabel Grimes and Aubrey Sorrells also reached double figures, scoring 18 points apiece.
Lia Edwards opened the scoring with an early free throw, before Aubrey Sorrells scored the first field goal for the Falcons, putting Montevallo up 3-2 at the 8:50 mark. The Tigers began to push, using a 13-0 run through the next five minutes to take a, 15-3, advantage at the 3:30 mark. Grimes erased the UM scoring drought, draining a triple at the 3:00 mark. The Tigers responded with a lay-in 30 seconds later, to take a 17-6 advantage. Edwards cashed in on an and-one and Sorrells made a driving lay-in in the last two minutes, as the Falcons trailed, 21-11, at the end of the first quarter.

UWA opened the second quarter with a pair of buckets, before the Falcons responded with buckets from Edwards and Gillies, as UWA held a, 25-15, lead at the 7:13 mark. After the Tigers held a 29-17 advantage, the Falcons scored the next four points to cut the deficit to, 29-21, with 3:03 left. The Tigers responded with a lay-in at 1:50, but the Falcons closed the half with an 8-0 run, highlighted by four points from Grimes, to cut the deficit to two points, 31-29, at the break.

Sorrells opened the scoring in the second half, nailing a turnaround jumper at the 9:24 mark to tie the game at 31. Edwards scored the next four UM points, as a triple gave Montevallo a, 35-33, lead at the 6:26 mark. After a UWA bucket, Sorrells cashed in on an and-one to put Montevallo ahead, 38-35, with 5:24 left. The Tigers responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 42-38, at the 3:55 mark. Grimes cut the UWA run with a triple, but the Tigers connected on a pair of buckets to extend its lead to five, 46-41, with 2:09 left. Saffold drained a triple in the final two minutes, as the Tigers held a 46-44, lead at the end of the third quarter.

Edwards opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to tie the game at 46. Edwards scored the next five points for the Falcons, but the Tigers held a, 53-51, lead at the 5:33 mark. After a UWA bucket, Sorrells scored the next four points to put Montevallo ahead, 57-53, with 3:10 left. The Tigers hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point, but the Falcons responded with huge back-to-back triples from Grimes and Edwards to put the Falcons ahead, 63-56, at the 1:41 mark. The Tigers hit from beyond the arc again, but Sorrells drained a huge triple in response to put Montevallo up by seven, 66-59, with 27 seconds left and seemingly put the game away. The Falcons knocked down four free throws in the final seconds to secure the 70-60 win over West Alabama on the road.
