Women’s Basketball Hosts Mississippi College and Delta State

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team is set to host a pair of conference opponents this weekend, facing off against Mississippi College (1/30) and Delta State (2/1).

Montevallo holds an overall record of 8-10 with a 6-7 mark in GSC play. The Falcons opened the season in Montgomery, falling to No. 16 Nova Southeastern and Embry-Riddle in the GSC/SSC Challenge. The Falcons split the next two road contests, defeating Shorter 52-51 and falling to Spring Hill 78-69. UM closed non-conference play with a dominant 94-67 win over UT Southern at home.

The Falcons opened conference play with home wins over No. 15 Lee (67-59) and Trevecca Nazarene (57-40). Montevallo followed that up with a pair of road contests, falling to Delta State (61-59) and Mississippi College (58-48). Montevallo closed 2024 splitting a pair of games, earning an 82-79 double overtime victory over Christian Brothers, and falling to No. 17 Union 71-65. Montevallo opened the new year facing off against three in-state opponents. The Falcons fell to Auburn Montgomery (88-69) and Alabama Huntsville (67-61, OT), before defeating West Alabama 70-60. The Falcons split a pair of home contests, defeating Valdosta State in overtime 69-64 and falling to West Florida 70-67.

Last week, the Falcons once again split a pair of contests, defeating Trevecca Nazarene 56-43, and falling to Lee 76-53. Aubrey Sorrells led the way for Montevallo leading her to garner her seventh consecutive GSC Freshman of the Week award.

Montevallo is averaging 63.8 points per game, while shooting 38.8 percent from the floor, including a 28.5 percent clip from long range. Opponents are averaging 65.9 points, while shooting 42.1 percent from the floor with a 32.8 percent clip from distance. The Falcons are averaging 35.3 rebounds, 11.0 assists, and 7.8 steals.

On the season, Aubrey Sorrells leads the team in scoring (12.6 ppg), while Jordan Gillies leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg), assists (69), and steals (43). Sorrells and Gillies share a team leading 13 blocks.

The Lady Choctaws opened the season defeating LeMoyne-Owen and falling to Lane in double overtime. The Lady Choctaws responded with three wins over Belhaven, Tougaloo, and Spring Hill. MC closed non-conference play with a 53-50 loss to Henderson State. MC opened conference play last week defeating Christian Brothers 62-53 and falling to No. 20 Union 77-66. MC picked up wins over Montevallo (58-48) and AUM (77-73, OT), before falling to Alabama Huntsville 81-54. The Lady Choctaws responded with back-to-back wins over West Alabama (63-53) and Valdosta State (73-65, OT), before dropping six straight to West Florida (68-72, OT), Lee (46-72), Trevecca Nazarene (51-56), Delta State (46-61), and No. 19 Union (62-70). The Lady Choctaws got back in the winning column last time out, defeating Christian Brothers 75-51 on Saturday.

MC averages 65.4 points per game, compared to opponents 61.1 points. The Lady Choctaws are shooting 40.8 percent from the field, with a 28.2 percent clip from long range. MC averages 38.0 rebounds, 9.8 assists, and 9.2 steals.

Individually, Tytiana Buckley leads the Lady Choctaws in scoring (12.4 ppg) and Keller Bigham leads the team in rebounding (5.8 rpg). Tiara Abron has a team leading 38 assists and 32 steals.

Series History Against Mississippi College…
Since 1992, these two squads have faced off 13 times with, MC leading the overall series 7-6. These two teams faced off earlier this year, with MC earning a 58-48 victory in Clinton.

Scouting Delta State: WATCH | LIVE STATS
Delta State holds an overall record of 11-8 and a 7-6 mark in GSC play. The Lady Statesmen opened the season with a pair of wins over Lane and LeMoyne-Owen, before dropping a pair against Henderson State and Arkansas Tech. Delta State closed non-conference play with close wins over Southern Arkansas (42-41) and Harding (64-60). The Lady Statesmen opened conference play last week with a pair of road games. Delta State fell to No. 20 Union 85-59 and defeated Christian Brothers 57-51. The Lady Statesmen followed that up with wins over Montevallo (61-59), Auburn Montgomery (77-66), and West Alabama (73-52). Delta State then dropped three consecutive games to Alabama Huntsville (37-77), West Florida (56-59), and Valdosta State (58-60, OT). The Lady Statesmen split a pair, defeating Trevecca Nazarene 62-51 and falling to Lee (41-71), before defeating Mississippi College 61-46. Last week, the Lady Statesmen defeated Christian Brothers 67-53 and fell to No. 19 Union 71-67.

DSU averages 60.1 points per game, compared to opponents 60.4 points. The Lady Statesmen shoot 39.5 percent from the field, with a 31.5 percent clip from long range. DSU averages 35.2 rebounds, 10.5 assists, and 6.8 steals.

Individually, Grace Watson leads the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). In the GSC, Watson ranks second in rebounding and third in blocks (1.3 bpg).

Series History Against Delta State…
Since 1984, these two squads have faced off 26 times with Delta State holding a 22-4 advantage. These two teams faced off earlier this year, with DSU earning a 61-59 win in Cleveland.
