MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Dominic Kienzle's first half goal led the Montevallo men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over in-state foe, West Alabama on Sunday evening. After four Gulf South Conference contests, the Falcons remain unbeaten in league play with eight points total (two wins, two ties).
Montevallo struck first, as
Alexander Mueller fired the first shot of the game in the fourth minute. The Tigers notched the first shot on goal of the contest in the ninth minute, but
Andre Etcheverry recorded his first save to keep the Tigers off the board early.
The Falcons would draw first blood, as
Dakota Hart found
Dominic Kienzle who scored his eighth goal of the season to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage in the 19
th minute. The Tigers looked to respond and capitalize off a corner kick in the 28
th minute, but a pair of UWA shots were off target. Montevallo drove down the field and responded with a pair of shots from
Tomas Prieto and
Victor Flores a minute later. Flores continued to test the UWA defense, with a pair of shots on goal in the next ten minutes, but the UWA keeper kept his team's deficit at one goal. The Falcons ultimately took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Tigers looked to strike first with an early shot on goal three minutes into the second half, but Etcheverry recorded his second save to keep the Falcons ahead. The Montevallo offense began to take control, holding possession and taking the next eight shots of the game through the next 20 minutes of action. The Tigers looked to finally find a promising drive with a shot on goal in the 70
th minute, but Etcheverry recorded another save to keep the Falcons in front. The Tigers continued to push through the next ten minutes, firing a pair of shots on goal, but Etcheverry remained stout in goal with saves in the 79
th and 81
st minute. The Falcons responded, as Kienzle fired a pair of shots on goal in the 83
rd and 84
th minute, but the UWA keeper denied UM the chance of extending its lead late. The Tigers used one last push to record a shot on goal in the 89
th minute, but Etcheverry's seventh save sealed the 1-0 victory for Montevallo over West Alabama.
