MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team closed the regular season on Sunday afternoon, falling to (RV) Mississippi College, 2-1, at Varsity Field.
The Choctaws struck first, firing a shot in the sixth minute which was off target. MC drew a foul right outside of the penalty box a few seconds later which led to a Choctaw goal, putting the visitors ahead early, 1-0.
Benjamin Williams recorded the first UM shot on goal in the ninth minute, but the MC keeper picked up a save to keep the Falcons off the board. The Choctaws went back on the offensive with a pair of shots, including a shot on target in the 18
th minute, but
Andre Etcheverry's first save denied MC a chance at extending its lead.
Dominic Kienzle fired a shot on goal in the 23
rd minute, but the MC keeper picked up another save. The Choctaws went back on the offensive, firing a shot in the 34
th minute, but a handball inside the box one minute later led to a penalty kick goal to put MC ahead 2-0.
Ian Palma recorded a shot on goal and Etcheverry recorded another save before the half, as the Choctaws took the 2-0 advantage to the break.
The Falcons looked to strike first in the second half, earning an early corner which led to an
Oscar Vallejo shot that went high in the 48
th minute. The Falcons continued to push earning two more corner kicks in the next two minutes, but Montevallo was unable to record a shot attempt. The Choctaws fired another shot on goal in the 55
th minute, but Etcheverry picked up his third save of the contest. Both teams recorded a pair of shots, before
Viktor Willems fired a shot on goal in the 67
th minute which was saved by the MC keeper. After a Choctaw shot off target, the Falcons quickly drove down the field and
Victor Flores drew a Choctaw foul in the penalty box.
Dominic Kienzle converted on the penalty kick to cut the Choctaw lead in half, 2-1, in the 71
st minute. The Choctaws went back on the offensive, recording three shots in the next six minutes, including a shot on goal which was saved in the 78
th minute. The Falcons pushed to find an equalizer in the final ten minutes but were unable to record a shot on goal, as the Choctaws took home the 2-1 victory.
