MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team earned its first road victory of the season, taking down Christian Brothers, 69-54, inside of Canale Arena on Thursday evening.
Kylee Norman led the way with a season high 19 points, as she drained six three-pointers of the day, while shooting 60-percent from beyond the arc. Elyse Hughes had a solid all-around game, recording 16 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Carlyn Burdette also reached double figures with 12 points.
Norman opened the game with back-to-back triples, before CBU responded with a three-pointer of its own. Hughes added a pair of buckets in the next few minutes, but the Lady Bucs would trim the Falcon lead to one point, 10-9, at the first media timeout. CBU cashed in on a lay-in to take its first lead, but Norman responded with her third triple of the game to put the Falcons back in front, 13-11, at the 4:14 mark. After a CBU basket, A Burdette triple and Hughes jumper, put the Falcons ahead, 18-13, with 2:58 left. Both teams traded a pair of baskets through the final three minutes of the opening quarter, as a Burdette jumper put Montevallo ahead, 22-17, at the end of the first.
London Robinson connected on a free throw and Elyse Hughes added a jumper in the second quarter, as Montevallo held on to a, 25-21, lead at the 5:35 mark. The Lady Bucs began to push, using a 9-0 run through the next three minutes to pull ahead, 30-25, at the 2:35 mark. A Jerrilyn Richardson free throw proved to be the only point for either team for the remainder of the quarter, as CBU took a, 30-26, lead into the break.
Audrey Hendrix opened the third quarter with a three-pointer, but the Lady Bucs responded with an 8-0 run to stretch the CBU lead out to, 38-29, at the 6:08 mark. Burdette halted the CBU run with a three-pointer, but put a pair of CBU buckets put the Lady Bucs up by double digits, 42-32, at the 4:43 mark. Montevallo responded with back-to-back baskets from Hughes and Richardson to cut the deficit in half, 42-37, with 2:38 left. The Lady Bucs cashed in on a lay-in, but an Emily Mouser free throw and another Norman triple made it a one possession game, 44-41, at the end of the third quarter.
Montevallo opened the fourth quarter with the first seven points, as a triple from Norman tied the game and free throws from Hughes and Richardson put the Falcons ahead, 48-44, at the 7:22 mark. After a CBU lay-in, Norman continued to fire from long range, draining her sixth three-pointer. Hughes and Burdette added jumpers in the next few minutes, as the Falcons held a, 55-49, advantage with 5:55 left in the contest. Montevallo put the game away, using a 10-0 run through the next four minutes to stretch the UM lead out to, 65-49, with 1:32 left. The Falcons knocked down five free throws in the final minute and a half to seal the 69-54 victory.
