Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Montevallo women's basketball team closed the opening weekend of Gulf South Conference play on Saturday, falling to Trevecca Nazarene, 76-57, inside of Trojan Fieldhouse.
Emily Mouser led the way for the Falcons, as the freshman scored a season-high 17 points, while adding eight rebounds. Audrey Hendrix and Jerrilyn Richardson also reached double figures, each scoring ten points.
The game opened with Elyse Hughes finding Hendrix who knocked down a three-pointer from the corner. Hughes and Kylee Norman added jumpers in the next few minutes, as Montevallo held a, 7-4, advantage at the 6:02 mark. The Trojans outscored the Falcons 6-1 through the next three minutes, to jump ahead, 10-8, with 3:13 left. Jerrilyn Richardson scored the Falcons next field goal, connecting from long range at 2:47 to put the Falcons back in front, 11-10. Johnigan added a jumper a minute later, but the Trojans held a, 15-13, advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Julia Susla opened the second quarter with a lay-in, before the Trojans cashed in on a pair of baskets. Emily Mouser responded with back-to-back buckets of her own to put the Falcons back in front, 20-19, at the 7:26 mark. The Falcons failed to find a field goal through the next six minutes, only converting on three free throws, as the Trojans pulled ahead, 30-23, with 36 seconds left in the half. Mouser cashed in on a jumper with 16 seconds left, but a steal and last second score would give Trevecca a, 32-25, advantage at the break.
The Trojans opened the second half with the first five points to jump ahead by double-digits, 37-25, early. Mouser scored the first points for the Falcons from the free throw line and added a three-pointer a minute later, cutting the deficit back down to single digits, 39-30, at the 7:20 mark. London Robinson entered the contest and scored four free throws, while Alani Ownes added a lay-in, but the Trojans stretched its lead out to 15 points, 52-37. Carlyn Burdette connected from long range in the final minute, but the Trojans took a, 54-40, lead into the final quarter.
The Trojans continued to push opening fourth quarter with a 14-4 run to take a commanding, 68-44, lead at the 5:25 mark. The Falcons continued to fight, outscoring the Trojans 13-8 through the remainder of the contest, but the Trojans would take home the, 76-57, victory.
