Moore's 24 Points Lead UM to Win Over AUM

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball tied the program's record for Gulf South Conference wins in a single season after a 78-68 win over Auburn Montgomery on Saturday night.

In the first four and a half minutes, Derek Moore scored all of the Falcons' points as the Falcons trailed 7-6 at the 15:27 mark. With 13:21 on the clock, Jaylen Curry posted an emphatic finish at the rim before slamming one home in transition to give the Falcons a 10-9 lead. Just over a minute later, Brandon Fussell tallied his first bucket of the game to give the Falcons a 14-11 lead. At the 10:48 mark, Moore knocked down a pair of free throws to eclipse double digits early before finishing in the paint to keep UM out in front 18-15. The two sides traded buckets for the next four minutes before Camden Andrews sparked a 10-0 Montevallo run that gave the Falcons a 30-21 lead. With 3:07 on the clock, Jay Gillispie laid one in to give UM a 34-25 lead before the Warhawks cut the lead down to five with back-to-back triples. Reese Gurner provided the highlight of the night with a 60-foot bomb to beat the halftime buzzer and give Montevallo a 43-33 advantage heading into the locker room.

The two rivals traded buckets to start the second half before AUM sliced into Montevallo's lead with a 7-2 run to make the score 49-45 with 15:19 left. With 14:28 on the clock, Curry knocked down just the second Montevallo three of the day from the right wing to stretch the lead back to seven and spark a 9-2 UM run that was capped by an Aidan Gardiner hook shot at the 10:53 mark. AUM answered with a run of its own the trimmed UM's advantage 58-52. Just a few possessions later, the Warhawks made it a one-possession game with 7:47 to go with a three that made the score 62-60. Montevallo then used a 11-0 run over the next four minutes capped by an Andrews triple to stretch the lead out to 73-60 with just 3:46 to play. Moore likely put the Falcons out of reach with his lone three of the night at the 2:17 mark but a pair of Gurner free throws in the final minute sealed UM's 78-68 win over AUM.
