Eight Falcons Score in 15-6 Road Win Over Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. – Montevallo women's lacrosse closed a weekend road trip 2-0 with a 15-6 win over Mars Hill on Sunday to improve to 3-3 on the season.
 
Mars Hill drew first blood at the 11:20 mark of the first quarter before the Falcons scored 12 unanswered goals sparked by a pair of Ellery Shearer goals that were less than a minute apart. With 7:29 on the clock, Jenna Piazza finished a free position shot to give the falcons a 3-1 lead before Claire Withington scored her first of four goals just 28 seconds later. On the ensuing UM possession, Lily Moats lifted Montevallo to a 5-1 advantage with an unassisted effort. With just 30 seconds left in the first, Withington beat the keeper off an assist from freshman Bridget Quayle to send the game to the second with Montevallo on top 6-1.
 
Mikaela Barbiere scored the first Falcon goal of the season moments before Withington tallied a third goal with 11:03 left in the first half. With 8:57 to go, Piazza recorded a second free-position goal to make the score 9-1. Withington's fourth goal came on an assist from Amber Lynch with 5:57 left in the half before Moats scored her second of the day to give UM an 11-1 lead. Sophomore Ally Rich closed the first half with Montevallo's 12th unanswered goal with just 59 seconds remaining.
 
Just a few seconds into the third, MacKenzie Griffin tallied her first save of the day in her return from injury after missing each of the last three games. Mars Hill cut into the lead with back-to-back goals to make the score 12-3 with 10:12 left in the third. With 4:23 remaining, the Lions added a third goal to trim the lead down to eight before Rich scored her second goal of the afternoon with 3:54 left to end the run. Griffin added a second save with 3:13 on the clock before Mars Hill scored to send the game to the fourth with Montevallo leading 13-5.
 
Carsyn Tinney tallied her third goal of the season with 5:28 left in the game after ten minutes of stingy defense from both teams. Griffin added her third save of the day with just 3:43 to go. The Lions scored with just 1:33 remaining before Asha Jamieson sealed the Falcons' 15-6 win with her lone goal of the day.
