Melendez Shuts Down Choctaws, Falcons Score Season-High Seven Runs in Game One Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team picks up their fourth consecutive win as they took care of business against Mississippi College 7-1. The Falcons improve to 8-4 and 4-1 inside the GSC. With the loss, the Choctaws are now 6-5 and 2-2 in GSC play.

The Choctaws wasted no time putting pressure in the first with a lead off single up the middle. After a Falcon error, MC had two on, one out. Adiel Melendez struck out the Choctaw clean-up batter and fielded a come backer from the batter after to get out of the jam. Connor Crowson was first-pitch swinging in the bottom of the first as he got a hold of one for a lead off home run, his GSC leading seventh homer of the season.

Melendez would battle with the Choctaw lineup with the one-run lead as Mississippi College had a runner reach second base in the first five innings of the ball game. The Falcon ace was resilient as he escaped Choctaw threats all game by inducing weak contact. Melendez struck out seven batters and is now third in the conference with 21 punch outs. He scattered five hits and allowed a season-low of two walks.

After Melendez retired MC 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth, the Falcons exploded for a four-run bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and third, Jacob Pearl lined a ball that went off the pitcher leg for an infield single to score Zac Carlisle. A batter later, Daniel Irizarry went yard for the first time this season with a three-run shot over the batter's eye in center. Staked to a five-run lead, Melendez fired a zero in the seventh with a swing strikeout and a nice 6-4-3 double-play from Ethan Huddleston and McGwire Turner.

In the bottom of the seventh, Logan Harbin and McGwire Turner hit back-to-back home runs on back-to-back pitches. These would be Harbin and Turner's third homers of the season.

Matthew Bullard would face the minimum in the eighth and gave way to Trey Felker in the ninth who closed the game out for Montevallo.
