Montevallo Stumbles Against No. 3 UAH on Senior Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball dropped a meeting with No. 3 Alabama Huntsville, 96-88, on Senior Day.
 
The Falcons and Chargers traded buckets for the first five minutes before UAH stretched its lead to 17-9 with a three at the 12:19 mark. UM trimmed the lead down to four with back-to-back buckets inside from Derek Moore. UAH took its largest lead of the half at 26-16 with consecutive triples before Reese Gurner ended the run at the 8:28 mark of the half. An old-school three-point play from Moore trimmed the lead down to five with 8:05 to play before UAH moved the lead to 31-23 at the 6:34 mark. With a Jaylen Curry three-pointer followed by a 2-for-2 trip to the line for Brandon Fussell, the Falcons cut the lead down to 35-31 with just under five to go before the break. A Gurner triple and a Fussell and-one tied the game at 37-37 out of the under-four media timeout. Curry gave Montevallo its first lead of the day with a finish at the rim before adding a three to make the score 42-39 Montevallo with 2:12 to go. UAH ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 45-44 lead into the locker room.
 
Montevallo regained control with a Moore triple to open the half before the two sides traded buckets for the next four minutes. Tyson Sexton's first triple of the day gave the Falcons a 61-59 lead with 15:28 to play. UAH would tie the game twice of the next two minutes but threes from Curry and Moore kept the Falcons out in front at 67-64. The Chargers then went on a 9-0 run to take a six-point lead at the 11:10 mark. The Falcons cut the lead down to four on two occasions but three free-throws from UAH kept the Chargers in control at 80-73. With six minutes to go, Camden Andrews brough the lead back down to seven with a finish in the paint before UAH pushed the lead out to 87-77 with 5:23 to go. Back-to-back buckets from Andrews brought the Falcons back within four with 1:12 to play but a UAH three with 42 seconds left secured the Chargers' 96-88 win over Montevallo.

  • The Falcons shot the ball well with a 47.3-percent mark from the floor while shooting 37.9-percent from deep but allowed UAH to shoot 61.8 percent from the floor and 51.9 percent from long range.
  • Montevallo lost the rebounding battle, 30-29, with Montevallo taking a 13-6 advantage in offensive boards.
  • Jaylen Curry led the Falcons with 24 points on a 10-for-18 mark shooting and 4-for-9 from deep while adding five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Brandon Fussell finished with 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting while pulling down three boards and dishing out a team-high five assists.
 
UP NEXT: Montevallo heads out on the final weekend of the regular season to face West Florida at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27.
