Women’s Basketball Closes Regular Season with Trip Down South

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team is set to close the regular season this week, with a pair of road contests against West Florida (2/27) and Valdosta State (3/1).

Montevallo holds an overall record of 11-14 and a 9-11 mark in GSC play. The Falcons opened the season in Montgomery, falling to No. 16 Nova Southeastern and Embry-Riddle in the GSC/SSC Challenge. The Falcons split the next two road contests, defeating Shorter 52-51 and falling to Spring Hill 78-69. UM closed non-conference play with a dominant 94-67 win over UT Southern at home.

The Falcons opened conference play with home wins over No. 15 Lee (67-59) and Trevecca Nazarene (57-40). Montevallo followed that up with a pair of road contests, falling to Delta State (61-59) and Mississippi College (58-48). Montevallo closed 2024 splitting a pair of games, earning an 82-79 double overtime victory over Christian Brothers, and falling to No. 17 Union 71-65. Montevallo opened the new year facing off against three in-state opponents. The Falcons fell to Auburn Montgomery (88-69) and Alabama Huntsville (67-61, OT), before defeating West Alabama 70-60. The Falcons split a pair of home contests, defeating Valdosta State in overtime 69-64 and falling to West Florida 70-67. Montevallo split its next two weekly conference series, defeating Trevecca Nazarene (56-43) and falling to Lee (76-53) on the road, while falling to Mississippi College (52-78) and defeating Delta State 50-48. The Falcons then fell to No. 17 Union, before defeating Christian Brothers 80-69. Montevallo dropped a close contest with Auburn Montgomery the next week.

Last weekend, the Falcons split a pair, defeating West Alabama 67-62, before falling to Alabama Huntsville.

Aubrey Sorrells had a solid week, leading her to gaining her tenth GSC Freshman of the Week award of the season.

Montevallo is averaging 63.7 points per game, while shooting 39.3 percent from the floor, including a 29.6 percent clip from long range. West Florida holds an overall record of 17-9 and a 13-7 mark in GSC play. The Argonauts opened the season with five consecutive wins over Eckerd, Palm Beach Atlantic, Spring Hill, and Tuskegee. UWF closed non-conference play with losses to Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern.

The Argonauts split a pair of games to open GSC play, defeating West Alabama 70-61 and falling to Alabama Huntsville 69-54. The Argos went on a six-game winning streak in conference play, defeating Valdosta State (64-62), No. 23 Lee (71-57), Trevecca Nazarene (94-55), Delta State (59-56), Mississippi College (72-68), and Christian Brothers (81-58), before falling to No. 12 Union 86-69. The Argonauts picked up wins over Auburn Montgomery (69-59) and Montevallo (70-67), before falling to Alabama Huntsville (69-65). UWF defeated West Alabama, before dropping three consecutive games to Valdosta State (75-69), Trevecca Nazarene (54-47), and Lee (67-52). The Argonauts then earned back-to-back wins over Mississippi College (51-33) and Delta State (69-56). UWF split a pair last week, falling to Union (96-70) and defeating Christian Brothers (80-59).

UWF averages 69.7 points per game, compared to opponents 64.8 points. The Argonauts shoot 40.5 percent from the field, with a 31.8 percent clip from long range. UWF averages 38.0 rebounds, 13.0 assists, and 9.9 steals.
Rylie Stephens leads the team in scoring (13.1 ppg), while Bella Green leads the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg). Bella Stone has team leads in assists (82) and steals (46).
Series History Against West Florida…
Since 1982, these two squads have faced off 72 times with the overall series being tied, 36-36. The Argonauts earned a tight, 70-67, victory in Montevallo earlier this season.

Valdosta State holds an overall record of 15-11 and a 10-10 mark in GSC play. The Blazers opened the season, splitting a pair of home contests in the GSC/SSC Challenge, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic and falling to Eckerd. Valdosta State closed non-conference play with wins over Brewton-Parker, Lynn, Georgia Southwestern, and Clayton State.

The Blazers split a pair to open GSC play, defeating West Alabama 72-67, before falling to Alabama Huntsville 73-53. Valdosta State followed that up, dropping a close contest at home to West Florida (64-62). The Blazers responded with two home wins over Trevecca Nazarene (64-50) and No. 23 Lee (58-50). VSU followed that up with two overtime contests in Mississippi, as the Blazers fell to Mississippi College 83-75 and defeated Delta State 60-58. Last weekend, VSU fell to No. 12 Union 72-63 and defeated Christian Brothers 97-62. The Blazers dropped a pair of close contests to Montevallo (69-64) and Auburn Montgomery (67-62), before defeating West Alabama 68-63. The Blazers then fell to Alabama Huntsville, before defeating West Florida (75-69). After falling to Lee (59-44), VSU picked up three consecutive victories over Trevecca Nazarene (49-40), Delta State (69-64), and Mississippi College (71-50). The Blazers dropped a pair last week, falling to Union (90-61) and Christian Brothers (53-48).

VSU averages 65.8 points per game, compared to opponents 62.4 points. The Blazers shoot 44.1 percent from the field, with a 31.0 percent clip from long range. VSU averages 33.1 rebounds, 13.4 assists, and 9.3 steals.

Kiersten Nelson leads the Blazers in scoring (13.8 ppg), while Erin Whalen leads the team in rebounding (8.5 rpg) and steals (49). Aryana Hicks leads the team in assists and ranks second in the GSC with 120 assists total and 4.8 assist per game average.
