Falcons Drop Series Finale to No. 1 Tampa

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team drops the finale against No. 1 Tampa, 4-15, on Sunday, Feb. 9. The Falcons drop to 4-3 on the season while the Spartans improve to 5-1.
 
After the first two batters of game reached, Falcons starter Gino Cozzi did a great job and was able to escape the first inning without any damage given up. Cozzi was able to punch out the final batter of the inning. Connor Crowson remained scorching hot at the plate as he led off with a double down the right field line. Logan Harbin was plunked a batter later, then was erased by a fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Tampa was able to roll a double play to get out of the inning.
 
Tampa was able to pick up where they left off in game two of the series as they blasted a two-run homer to take the first lead of the game. They would add a third run in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly. The run was unearned as he reached via an error. The Spartans put up four runs in the fourth inning including a three-run shot. Montevallo would commit two errors in the inning. They would score two more in the sixth to make it a 9-0 lead.
 
Crowson would leave the yard for the fourth time this season in the bottom of the fifth to give UM their first run of the game. McGwire Turner would hit his second long ball of the season an inning later. Turner and Crowson both homered in game two on Saturday. Montevallo added two runs in the seventh inning off a Spartan error and a single up the middle by Jackson Webster.
 
Tampa would hold the Falcons down from there and would take their second series win of the season.

GAME NOTES
  • Connor Crowson would lead the way for Montevallo at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and two singles. He was a triple shy of the cycle. Crowson exits the weekend as the home run leader in the Gulf South Conference with four.
  • McGwire Turner blasted his second homer of 2025 and he has homered in consecutive games.
  • Logan Medsker recorded his second 1-2-3 inning of the season.
  • Montevallo now has 16 home runs this season as a team which is nine more than the team with the second most (Trevecca Nazarene and Lee with 7).

Montevallo will now turn their attention to next weekend where they open up GSC play as they travel to Pensacola, Florida to take on No. 14 West Florida in a three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14 at 5:00 p.m. CT.
