MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo opened Gulf South Conference action with a 19-10 loss to Alabama Huntsville on Monday night.
The Chargers struck first in the opening three minutes before
Claire Withington scored back-to-back Montevallo goals in consecutive UM possessions. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashlei Piazza added a pair of saves before UAH tied the game at 2-2 with 6:17 left in the first. UAH added a pair of unanswered goals in the final four minutes to take a 4-2 lead into the second.
Following a UAH goal to open the quarter,
Ellery Shearer tallied the Falcons first woman-up goal of the night to cut the lead down to 5-3 with 11:17 in the half. Piazza would add another pair of saves over the next two minutes, but the Chargers would take an 8-3 advantage midway through the second. Withington ended the Falcons' scoring drought with her third of the day at the 2:46 mark to cut the lead down to four. UAH added another pair of goals to take a 10-4 lead into the break.
The third quarter opened in a back-and-forth affair with each side scoring two goals each to open the second half. Goals from Wihtington and
Mikaela Barbieri cut the lead to 12-6 before the Chargers added a third goal in the opening four minutes to take a seven-goal lead. Shearer found her second goal of the night on a free-position attempt at the 9:34 mark before added a third goal with 6:28 left in the third. UAH punctuated the third and took a 15-8 lead into the final quarter.
Withington answered an opening goal from the Chargers at the 13:22 mark to make the score 16-9. The Chargers would go on to score three unanswered goals to go up 19-9 with 4:45 remaining.
Kiley Shea's lone goal of the night came with just 3:33 remaining as the Falcons would go on to fall, 19-10, in the GSC opener.
