Falcons Fall to Union on Senior Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team drops both games of their double-header against Union on Saturday, Apr. 19. With the series loss, the Falcons are now 24-21 on the season and 15-15 in GSC play. The Bulldogs improve to 20-26 and 14-15 in conference play.
 
GAME ONE
A high-scoring affair saw the Bulldogs take the early lead with a single through the left side. The Falcons responded with an RBI single from Evan Radford to bring home McGwire Turner from second to tie the game. Montevallo took the lead as Khalil Bell brought home Connor Crowson from second with another RBI single to center.
 
Falcons starting pitcher Matthew Bullard did a great job of settling in as he only allowed one base runner from the second inning through the fourth inning. Bullard had two 1-2-3 innings and the only base runner that reached came on a hit by pitch. Bullard put up his fourth consecutive scoreless inning in the top of the fifth, then the Falcons were able to extend their lead in the bottom half as Crowson singled home McGwire Turner after Turner double to start the Falcons part of the fifth. Crowson scored later in the inning on a single off the bat of Logan Harbin.
 
In the top of the sixth, Matthew Bullard retired the Bulldogs in order with two strikeouts looking and a ground out to Ethan Huddleston at short. Connor Crowson blasted his 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Pearl scored on the homer after reaching base on a hit by pitch.
 
Both teams were able to scratch a run across in the seventh, the Falcons held a five-run lead going into the eighth. In the eighth inning, Union exploded eight runs on four hits including three hits that scored two runs. The Falcon pitching staff walked four batters in the inning.
 
With Montevallo now down 10-7, Daniel Irizarry hit his second home run of the second to bring the Falcons within two. In the top of the ninth, Union scored five runs including back-to-back homers to take a 15-8 lead.
 
McGwire Turner hit his eighth long ball of the season in the bottom of the ninth to bring UM within five, but the final three batters of the game struck out.

GAME TWO
The Bulldogs took the early on Montevallo for the third consecutive game as they scored on a Falcon miscue and on a wild pitch in the inning. UM responded with a two-run single from Khalil Bell to tie the ballgame.
 
After scoreless innings in the second and third, the Bulldogs took a 6-2 lead with an RBI hit by pitch, a two RBI singe and an RBI single up the middle. Evan Radford had an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the fourth to drive home Jacob Pearl.
 
Union drew six consecutive walks in the fifth inning, then blew the game wide open with a bases clearing double down the right field line. Montevallo was able to respond with a solo homer from Luke Mitchell. The Falcons struck again with an RBI single off the bat of Connor Crowson, but UM got caught in a pickle between third and home to end the inning.
 
Now down 12-5, Montevallo scratched one across in the sixth with an RBI ground out from Logan Harbin. The Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but the Union Bulldogs lead was too much for the Falcons.
