OXFORD, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team sees their run at the 2025 Gulf South Conference Tournament come to an end with a loss in the championship against West Alabama on Wednesday, May 7 at Choccolocco Park.
West Alabama jumped all over the Falcons with an eight-run first inning. The Tigers scored eight runs on seven hits while UM committed one error. On the first pitch of the ballgame, UWA set the tone with a solo shot to left center. The Tigers would total six singles in the inning and one sacrifice fly.
The Falcons responded by loading the bases with no outs with consecutive singles by
Jacob Pearl,
McGwire Turner and
Connor Crowson.
Evan Radford hit the Falcons fourth single in a row to drive home Pearl and Turner. UM loaded the bases once again as
Logan Harbin reached on an error.
Ian Cartwright brought home Crowson from third with a sacrifice fly.
Payton Stephenson drew a walk to load the bases for a third time in the inning. UWA escaped with no further damage.
Neither team would score in the second as
Matthew Bullard retired the Tigers in order with three ground outs. Montevallo scratched one across in the third as
Jacob Pearl worked a bases loaded walk. Cartwright scored as he reached on an infield single earlier in the inning.
UWA got the run back on a lead off solo homer in the top of the fourth. This would be
Matthew Bullard's lone earned run allowed of the game. In the bottom half of the inning, West Alabama opted for their top starting pitcher, Bryant Quimby. Quimby started the first match up between both teams in the GSC Tournament where he struck out 11. He continued his dominance as he went five innings and allowed two hits and no earned runs.
Bullard fired a 1-2-3 top of the fifth including two fly outs and a ground out. UM would go scoreless, but had a two-out double off the bat of
Ethan Huddleston.
Mason Creacy came on for Montevallo and picked up where Bullard left off. Creacy would only allow one base runner in the sixth inning as he kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Both pitching staffs kept the opposing offense at bay with a scoreless inning in the seventh and eighth.
UWA blew the game completely open with four runs on three hits. The Tigers drew four walks in the inning. West Alabama retired the Falcons in order in the ninth to capture the 2025 GSC Championship.
