MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team earned a hard-fought result on Wednesday evening, as a strong defensive effort led to a scoreless draw against No. 4 Anderson.
The Falcons shut down a high-powered Trojan offense that entered the contest scoring a total of eight goals through the first two games of the season. Along with earning the shutout, the Falcons limited the Trojans to one shot on goal.
After a slow start for both teams offensively, Montevallo struck first with a shot by
Benjamin Williams in the 12
th minute. Anderson recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 20
th minute, but
Andre Etcheverry recorded the save to keep the Trojans off the board.
Anderson continued to push, firing a pair of shots and earning four corner kicks in the next ten minutes, but the Trojans failed to convert. Montevallo looked to strike in the 32
nd minute, as
Dakota Hart and
Benjamin Williams fired shots, followed by an
Ian Palma shot on goal which was saved by the Trojan keeper. Neither team recorded a shot through the remainder of the period, as the game remained scoreless at the break.
Anderson struck first in the second half, firing a pair of shots in the 50' and 54', which both went wide left. Montevallo saw shots from
Marc Velasco-Montoya and
Dakota Hart which both went wide in the 61' and 68', respectively.
Kagiso Mathabatha followed that up with his first shot on goal of the season in the 73
rd minute, which was saved by the Trojan keeper. Both teams traded a pair of shots, before
Alex Mueller recorded another shot on goal in the 82
nd minute for the Falcons.
The Trojans pushed late, earning a free kick and firing shots in the 85' and 89', but both were off target, as time expired leading to the scoreless draw between the two squads.
