CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Montevallo men's soccer team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 1-1 draw at Lee on Friday evening.
The Falcons struck first, as
Ian Palma fired a shot on goal in the seventh minute, which was saved by the Flames' keeper. Lee responded with a pair of shots, one of those being on goal, but
Andre Etcheverry would record his first save to keep the contest scoreless.
Benjamin Williams recorded a pair of shots in the next few minutes, but the Flames drew first blood, scoring a goal in the 30
th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Flames looked to extend the lead, firing another shot on goal in the 33
rd minute, but Etcheverry picked up his second save of the game, keeping the deficit at one goal.
Caleb Moore looked to provide the equalizer with his first shot on goal of the season in the 43
rd minute, but the Lee keeper recorded the save, keeping the Falcons off the scoreboard. Etcheverry recorded one more save in the final minute, as the Flames took the, 1-0, lead into the break.
Both teams got off to slow starts in the second half, as the first shot came 20 minutes into the new period. Montevallo's first shot of the second half came off the foot of
Viktor Willems in the 67
th minute. A minute later, Willems found
Seth Acton who scored his second goal of the season to knot the score, 1-1, in the 69
th minute. Lee would fire a pair of shots in the next ten minutes, before
Benjamin Williams recorded a shot of his own in the 81
st minute. Both teams picked up yellow cards in the final minutes, but neither were able to convert on free kick opportunities, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
