FLORENCE, S.C. –
Will Mashburn found the back of the net in the final seconds, leading Montevallo Men's Soccer to a season opening draw at Francis Marion on Thursday evening.
Both teams started off slow in the first game of the regular season, as it took 15 minutes for the first shot of the game to be recorded. Francis Marion fired its first shot on goal in the 23
rd minute, but
Andre Etcheverry was stout in goal, recording his first save of the season.
Tommaso Padroni recorded the first shot of the season for Montevallo in the 30
th minute, which was blocked.
Dakota Hart and
Lucas Atria recorded the only other shots for the Falcons in the first half. The Patriots looked to take the lead late in the first period, but Etcheverry recorded his third save, ultimately sending the game into a scoreless tie at the break.
Both teams fired shots early in the second half, with Montevallo's coming off the foot of
Viktor Willems in the 49
th minute. The Patriots fired a few more shots, before finally scoring a goal in the 64
th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons looked to respond quickly, as
Seth Acton found
Dakota Hart who fired the first Falcon shot on goal 30 seconds after the Patriot goal. Etcheverry denied the Patriots a chance of increasing its lead in the 75
th minute, as he recorded his fourth save of the game, keeping the deficit at one goal. The Falcons quickly drove down the field and looked to provide the equalizer in the 76
th minute, as
Ian Palma found the back of the net, but an offsides penalty would take the goal of the scoreboard.
The Falcons began to push in the final minutes, as
Dominic Kienzle fired a shot in the 88
th minute, followed by a
Seth Acton shot a minute later. After a Patriot goal kick, the Falcons regained possession and looked to find an equalizer with less than a minute to go.
Will Mashburn answered the call, finding the back of the net on his only shot attempt of the night with eight seconds left to tie the game.
Francis Marion failed to respond in the final seconds, as Mashburn's late goal sealed the 1-1 season opening draw.
