Box Score MARS HILL, N.C. –
Dominic Kienzle had a career-best, five-point day with two goals and one assist, as Montevallo Men's Soccer dropped a high-scoring contest at Mars Hill, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.
The Mars Hill offense got to work quickly, driving down the field and earning two corner kicks in the opening minutes of play. Montevallo fired the first shot attempt of the game which came off the foot of Kienzle in the eighth minute.
Ian Palma followed that up with the first shot on goal of the game in the 14
th minute.
The Lions recorded its first shot attempt in the 16
th minute which was off target, but the second Lion shot attempt found the back of the net, putting the home team ahead 1-0 in the 23
rd minute.
The Lions fired another shot on goal in the 30
th minute, but
Andre Etcheverry would come through with his first save of the game. Mars Hill continued to push offensively, ultimately scoring another goal in the 33
rd minute to pull ahead 2-0.
Montevallo looked to gain momentum late in the first half, as
Lucas Atria fired a shot in the 41
st minute, but Atria's header ultimately went wide left. The Lions responded with a shot on goal, but Etcheverry recorded his third save of the contest to keep the deficit at two goals heading into the break.
The Falcon offense struck early in the second half, as
Seth Acton fired an assist to Kienzle who found the back of the net in the 51
st minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Mars Hill looked to respond, as the Lions drove down the field and drew a foul right outside of the penalty box. The Lions fired a shot on the free kick which was blocked by the Falcon wall in the 58
th minute.
The Falcons controlled possession through the next few minutes and
Sebastian Flores found Kienzle who scored his second goal of the game in the 67
th minute, to knot the game at two goals apiece. Kienzle continued to impact the game, as he found
Dakota Hart who scored his first goal as a Falcon in the 70
th minute to put UM ahead, 3-2.
The Lions halted the Falcon run, scoring a goal in the 75
th minute to tie the game, 3-3. Mars Hill continued to push offensively, as the Lions fired two more shots before recording another goal in the 83
rd minute to regain the lead, 4-3.
The Lions held strong defensively denying the Falcons a chance at tying the game in the final minutes to preserve the 4-3 victory.
