Women's Basketball Set for Road Contests at VSU and UWF

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team heads east for a pair of conference games at Valdosta State (Jan. 15) and West Florida (Jan. 17).

Montevallo holds an overall record of 3-11 and a 2-7 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Falcons dropped a pair of close contests last week, falling to the top team in the GSC, UAH, by eight points on Thursday, before dropping a six point-contest against West Alabama on Saturday. Emily Mouser had a strong weekend for the Falcons, averaging 20 points and shooting over 50-percent from the floor, leading her to being named GSC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.

On the season, Montevallo is averaging 55 points, while shooting 35.7-percent from the floor and 27-percent from long range. On the season, Mouser leads the team in scoring (10.8 ppg), assists (44), and steals (16), while Elyse Hughes leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and field goal percentage (.449).

Valdosta State holds an overall record of 7-8 and a 4-5 mark in GSC play. The Blazers split a pair of contests last week, falling to Union and defeating Christian Brothers. VSU averages 71.1 points (third in the GSC), while shooting 43.3-percent from the floor (second in the GSC) and 30.9-percent from distance. The Blazers rank second as a team in rebounding, averaging 39.9 boards.

Erin Whalen leads the way for the Blazers and ranks seventh in the GSC in scoring (14.3 ppg), second in rebounding (9.4 rpg), and second in steals per game (2.5). Aryana Hicks leads the league in assists per game (5.1), while ranking second in assist/turnover ratio (2.4).

West Florida enters the week with an 11-5 overall record and a 6-3 mark in GSC play. The Argos split a pair of contests last week, defeating Christian Brothers, before falling to Union. West Florida averages 69.2 points, while shooting 41.3-percent from the floor and 29.7-percent from long range.

Amelia Bell leads the way for the Argos and sits atop the conference in field goal percentage (.625). Bell also ranks tenth in the GSC in scoring (12.9 ppg), fifth in rebounding (8.0 rpg), and third in blocks per game (1.5). Isabel Grimes holds a team leading-41 assists.

  • Montevallo and Valdosta State have faced off 44 times with VSU holding a 34-10 advantage in the overall series.
