Men's Basketball Heads to Mississippi for Two-Game Road Trip

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball closes the month of January with a road trip to Mississippi to take on Mississippi College and Delta State.

Montevallo heads into the weekend with a 13-6 overall record and a 9-4 mark in conference action after opening the season with a 3-2 mark in nonconference action to open the season. The Falcons tallied a 4-2 start to conference action in the month of December with wins over Trevecca Nazarene, Delta State, Mississippi College, and Christian Brothers while falling to Lee in the conference opener on Dec. 4 and Union on the road in the month's final conference matchup. Montevallo opened 2026 with an 89-62 win over Auburn Montgomery before topping UAH, 71-68, on Jan. 8. The Falcons then dropped consecutive meetings with West Alabama on Jan. 10 before falling to Valdosta State, 101-83, on the road on Jan. 15. Montevallo returned to the win column with a 97-87 win over West Florida behind a 51-point performance from Derek Moore. Montevallo then picked up an 83-77 win over Trevecca Nazarene on Jan. 22 to kick off the second half of conference play. Most recently, Montevallo topped Lee, 71-66 on Jan. 24.
 
Montevallo scores an average of 78.9 points per game on a 46.5-percent shooting mark while adding a 35.2-percent clip from deep and a 74.7-percent mark from the free-throw line. On the glass, the Falcons tallied an average of 36.9 rebounds per game with 9.2 offensive rebounds per game. Montevallo ranks second in the GSC with an average of 15.95 assists per game while posting a 1.24 assist-to-turnover margin with just 12.9 turnovers per game. Defensively, Montevallo allows just 70.5 points per game for the second-best mark in the league on an opponent shooting average of 41.3-percent while allowing just a 32.5-percent clip from deep. Montevallo also allows 34.6 rebounds per game while forcing 14.2 turnovers per game on a GSC second-best mark of 9.21 steals per game.
 
Senior forward Derek Moore leads the conference with an average of 19.5 points per game on a league-high 64.9-percent shooting mark while ranking seventh in the league with an average of 6.9 rebounds per game. Brandon Fussell ranks second on the team with an average of 15.9 points per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and leading the conference with 5.5 assists per game. Devon McKinnon averages 10.3 points per game on a 37.8-percent shooting mark while Jaylen Curry averages 10.0 points per game on a 42.0-percent clip from the floor.
 
Mississippi College heads into Thursday night's meeting with Montevallo with a 9-9 overall record and a 6-6 mark in conference play after opening the season with a 3-3 mark in nonconference action. December saw the Choctaws post a 3-3 start to conference play after picking up wins over Christian Brothers, Union and Auburn Montgomery before falling in three-straight to Montevallo, Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama. MC opened the 2026 calendar with a road win over Valdosta State on Jan. 2 before falling to West Florida on the road on Jan. 4. MC added a 97-87 win over Lee on Jan. 8 before dropping a meeting with Trevecca Nazarene on Jan. 10. The Choctaws picked up a 69-65 win over Delta State on Jan. 17 before falling to Union, 74-68, on Jan. 22.
 
The Choctaws average a total of 76.8 points per game on a 45.6-percent shooting mark while shooting 33.9 percent from deep and 69.7 percent from the charity stripe. On the glass, MC tallied an average of 36.9 rebounds per game while adding an average of 11.3 assists per game. Defensively, MC allows 79.9 points per game with opponents shooting 45.7 percent from the floor while shooing 34.1 percent from deep and 70.1 percent from the line. On the boards, MC allows 34.1 rebounds per game while forcing 9.9 turnovers with an average of a 5.1 steals per game.
 
Marcel Bridges leads the team with an average of 16.5 points per game on a 54.6-percent shooting mark while adding an average of 5.3 rebounds per game while Phil Nelson ranks second on the squad with 15.7 points on a 51.5-percent clip from the field and a 47.8-percent mark from deep. Avaughn Johnson has tallied an average of 14.7 points per game on a 48.9-percent shooting mark while adding an average of 9.7 rebounds per game to lead the team. DeMarcus Powe rounds out the Choctaws' double-digit scorers with an average of 11.7 points per game on 39.5 percent from the floor.
 
Delta State comes into the weekend with a 7-10 overall record and a 4-8 mark in conference play after posting a 3-2 record in nonconference play to open the season. In the month of December, the Statesmen recorded a 2-4 record to start conference play with wins over Christian Brothers and AUM while falling to Union, Montevallo, West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville. The Statesmen opened the new year with a road loss to West Florida on Jan. 2 before falling to Valdosta State, 90-72, on Jan. 4. DSU then picked up back-to-back wins against Trevecca Nazarene on Jan. 8 before topping Lee, 73-67, on Jan. 10. Delta State then fell to Mississippi College, 69-65, on Jan. 17 before falling to CBU, 66-64, on Jan. 22 in the Statesmen's most recent outing.
 
The Statesmen average 69.9 points per game on a a 40.8-percent shooting mark while adding a 32.1-percent clip from deep and a 77.6-percent mark from the line. On the glass, DSU averages 33.3 rebounds per game with an average of 10.4 offensive rebounds per game. DSU posts a 1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio with an average of 12.0 assists per game while averaging 11.5 turnovers per game. Defensively, DSU allows 71.4 points per game on a 46.0-percent shooting mark with a 36.7-percent clip from deep from DSU opponents. On the glass, DSU opponents average 35.6 rebounds per game while the Statesmen record an average of 5.9 steals per game.
 
Dacory Porter leads the team with an average of 15.9 points per game on a 49.4-percent shooting mark while adding 5.5 rebounds per game. Bryce Clayton ranks second on the squad with 12.5 points per game on a 42.9-percent shooting clip while shooting 38.1 percent from deep. Kolby Horrace adds an average of 11.7 points per game on a 37.0-percent shooting clip while adding 5.0 rebounds per game. Je'Marion Westbrook rounds out DSU's double-digit scorers with 11.4 points per game while leading the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.
