MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball continues its stretch of matchups against in-state rivals with meetings against Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama on Jan. 8
th and 10
th, respectively.
OFFICIAL SCHEDULE
Montevallo enters the weekend with the third-best conference mark in the Gulf South with a 5-2 record while adding a 9-4 mark overall. The Falcons closed the early-season nonconference schedule with a 3-2 mark with wins over Barry, Fisk and Spring Hill while falling to No. 2 Nova Southeastern and taking a 74-73 loss on the road at Georgia Southwestern. The December conference schedule saw Montevallo post a 4-2 mark after opening the month with a loss to Lee on the road before taking a dominant 90-60 win over Trevecca Nazarene on Dec. 6. The Falcons went on to add a pair of home wins over Delta State and Mississippi College before topping Christian Brothers, 75-54, on Dec. 18. The Falcons then fell to Union, 67-63, on Dec. 20 before rebounding with a 91-61 win over Point on New Year's Eve. Most recently, the Falcons picked up an 89-62 win over Auburn Montgomery on Sunday, Jan. 4.
The Falcons' offense averages 78.8 points per game on a 46.3-percent shooting mark from the floor while adding a 33.8-percent clip from beyond the three-point line and a 72.5-percent clip from the free throw line. On the glass, Montevallo pulls down an average of 37.4 rebounds per game with 9.2 offensive boards per contest. The Falcons have posted a 1.4 assist to turnover ratio with Montevallo tallying an average of 16.8 assists per game for the second-best mark in the GSC. Defensively, Montevallo allows just 66.8 points per game on a 39.7-percent shooting mark from its opponents to rank second in the GSC in both statistical categories. The Falcons lead the GSC with an average of 10.3 steals per game while forcing an average of 15.8 turnovers per game.
Individually,
Derek Moore leads the team and ranks second in the GSC with 17.8 points per game on a league-high 65.9-percent mark from the floor and an 82.1-percent clip from the stripe while also leading the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
Brandon Fussell ranks second on the squad with 15.1 points per game on a 42.2-percent mark from the field while leading the conference with 6.1 assists per game in 33.8 minutes on the floor. Freshman guard
Devon McKinnon scores 11.8 points per contest on a 37.4-percent mark from the floor while leading the squad with 27 threes on the season.
The Chargers head into Thursday night's matchup on a five-game win streak with a 6-2 mark against GSC opponents while posting an 11-3 overall record. UAH opened the season with a 5-1 record in the nonconference schedule with the lone loss coming on the road at No. 1 Nova Southeastern on Nov. 14. UAH took home an 87-80 win over West Florida on Dec. 4
th to open the GSC schedule before falling to Valdosta State, 93-91, on the road on Dec. 6. The Chargers then drooped a home meeting with Trevecca Nazarene on Dec. 11 before bouncing back with a 21-point victory over Lee on Dec. 13
th. The Chargers closed the 2025 calendar year with a pair of road wins over Mississippi College and Delta State. UAH began the new year with an 80-54 win over Union on Friday, Jan. 2 before topping Christian Brothers, 71-56, on Jan. 4 in the Chargers' most recent outing.
UAH ranks third in the GSC with an average of 87.0 points per game on a league-best 49.5-percent shooting mark while shooting 39.5-percent from long range and 72.8-percent from the free throw line. On the boards, the Chargers average 39.6 rebounds per game while adding an average of 9.8 offensive rebounds. UAH posts an average of 14.9 assists per game while adding 6.4 steals per game. Defensively, UAH allows 72.9 points per game on a 40.1-percent shooting mark from the Charger's opponents.
Individually, Quentin Toles leads the team with 16.9 points per game on a 43.0-percent shooting mark while shooting 40.9 percent from long range and adding an average of 3.5 rebounds. Thomas Allard leads UAH with an average of 6.2 rebounds while also scoring 15.8 points on a 51.8-percent shooting mark. Matt Thurman ranks third on the squad with an average of 10.5 points per game on a 46.8-percent clip from the floor and a 41.3-percent mark from long range while adding 5.2 rebounds per game.
West Alabama heads into the weekend as the No. 14 team in the Div. II Men's Basketball Coaches poll with a 13-1 overall record and an 8-0 mark in conference play as the top team in the GSC standings. The Tigers opened the season with a pair of wins at Albany State and Central State in mid-November before falling to Georgia Southwestern on Nov. 19 for the lone loss of the season. Following another pair of nonconference wins, UWA opened conference action with a 100-92 win over Valdosta State on the road before topping West Florida, 60-57, on Dec. 6. The Tigers added a pair of home wins over Lee on Dec. 11 and Trevecca Nazarene on Dec. 13 before moving on to take down Delta State, 67-51, on the road. UWA closed 2025 with a road win over Mississippi College on Dec. 20
th before topping Williams Baptists on Dec. 30. To open January, the Tigers took an 80-57 win at home against Christian Brothers before defeating Union, 73-62, on Jan. 4 in UWA's most recent test.
West Alabama averages a total of 80.6 points per game on a GSC third-best mark of 48.7 percent from the floor and a second-best 41.7-percent clip from long range while shooting 75.4 percent from the free throw line. On the glass, UWA averages 39.9 rebounds per game with an average of 12.8 offensive rebounds. The Tigers average 14.64 assists per game while giving up just 10.1 turnovers per game for a league-high 1.44 assist to turnover ratio. West Alabama boasts the top defense in the GSC allowing just 60.6 points per game on a league-best 38.4-percent shooting while adding 6.71 steals and 3.14 blocks per game.
Caleb Parr leads UWA with 11.9 points per game on a 52.1-percent shooting mark while adding 26 threes on the season and 3.9 rebounds per game while Rasean Frederick averages 11.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Elliot Tulip ranks third on the squad with 11.1 points per game on a 47.6-percent mark with Christian Thompson leading the GSC with an average of 11.1 rebounds per game and 10.1 points for of just two players in the league averaging a double-double.
