Montevallo Holds Off UAH for 71-68 Win at Home

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball held off a late push to take a 71-68 win over Alabama Huntsville in the Falcons' Pack the SAC game on Thursday night.
 
The two sides traded buckets to start the game before Sam Duskin knocked down a trio of threes in a 12-0 Montevallo run that gave the Falcons a 17-5 lead at the 12:26 mark. The Chargers responded with a 11-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead down to 19-16 with just over seven minutes before the half. Brandon Fussell and Derek Moore combined for Montevallo's next 12 points while the Falcons held UAH scoreless over the next four minutes to take a 15-point lead with 4:02 on the clock. UAH trimmed the lead down to 33-22 with another 8-2 run just before the half.
 
UAH battled back to make it a one-point game with a 13-2 run to open the second half before Moore ended the run with a finish in the paint. Another Sam Duskin triple followed by a bucket from Fussell stretched Montevallo's lead back to double digits at 46-35 with 12:43 to play. The Chargers would go on to take a 51-50 lead at the 10:15 mark after a 16-4 that left Montevallo trailing. UAH pushed its lead out to 57-53 before a Fussell triple cut the lead back down to one with 6:24 to play. Back-to-back threes from Fussell and Duskin regained Montevallo's lead at 64-62 with just over four minutes to play. Montevallo used some clutch free-throw shooting with a 7-for-8 mark down the stretch to hold off UAH and take its first win over the Chargers since 2022.

  • Montevallo posted a 39.3-percent shooting mark on the night while shooting 37.9 percent from deep and 72.7 percent from the line with UAH shooting just 32.7 percent from the floor and 25 percent from deep.
  • The Falcons took a slim lead on the glass with a 39-37 advantage in total rebounds with both sides recording 10 offensive rebounds.
  • Brandon Fussell tallied his third 20-point game of the season with a 25-point outing on 8-for-19 shooting while adding a 4-for-9 mark from deep with seven assists on the night.
  • Sam Duskin posted a career night with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from long range while adding eight rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
  • Derek Moore closed Montevallo's double-digit scorers with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting while adding a pair of boards.
