Falcons Drop Close Contest to UAH

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team dropped a tight battle on Thursday evening, falling to GSC leader-UAH, 64-56, inside of Central State Bank Arena.

A pair of Falcons reached double figures in Emily Mouser (17) and Elyse Hughes (14). The Falcons were stout defensively holding UAH to its lowest scoring output in conference play.

Montevallo opened the game strong with back-to-back baskets from Hughes and Mouser. The Chargers scored the next five points, but a pair of free throws from Mouser would put the Falcons ahead, 6-5, at the 5:01 mark. Both teams would trade baskets through the next four minutes with Mouser draining a triple and Hughes knocking down back-to-baskets, as Montevallo held on to a, 13-12, advantage with 1:55 left in the opening quarter. Olivia Johnigan closed the quarter with a driving lay-in to give the Falcons a, 15-12, lead at the end of one.

Susla opened the second quarter strong with four early points and Hughes added a lay-in to stretch the Montevallo lead out to, 21-14, at the 6:57 mark. The Chargers took control through the next five minutes with a 14-0 run to pull ahead, 28-21, at the 1:46 mark. Both teams traded points with Mouser and Susla hitting buckets for UM, as UAH held a, 33-25, advantage with 13 seconds left in the second quarter. Audrey Hendrix knocked down three free throws to close the half, as UAH took a, 33-28, lead into the break.

The Chargers opened the second half with the first four points, before Mouser cashed in on a pull-up jumper. UAH knocked down back-to-back three pointers to stretch its lead out to double digits, 43-30, at the 7:24 mark. Montevallo would cut the deficit down to single digits, 43-35, as Mouser hit a pair of free throws and Johnigan knocked down a triple. The Chargers responded with a pair of baskets, before Hughes knocked down a turn around jumper, as UAH held a, 47-37, advantage with 2:10 left in the third. Mouser hit a driving lay-in in the final two minutes, but the Chargers outscored the Falcons 6-2 to take a, 53-39, lead into the final quarter.

UAH opened the fourth quarter with a triple, but Richardson and Susla responded with the next five points, as the Chargers led, 56-45, at the 7:14 mark. Both teams began to struggle on the offensive end, combining for one field goal through the next four minutes, as the Chargers held on to a, 58-45, advantage with 3:11 left in the contest. The Falcons began to pick up the pace, outscoring the Chargers 7-1 through the next two minutes, as buckets from Hughes and Kylee Norman cut the deficit to seven, 59-52, with 1:08 left in the game. Both teams traded a pair of baskets with Hughes and Mouser hitting back-to-back baskets for UM, as the Chargers led, 63-56, with 20 seconds remaining. The Chargers ultimately took home the, 64-56, victory inside of Central State Bank Arena.
