Falcons Sweep Trevecca Nazarene in Crucial GSC Matchup

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's volleyball team earned a crucial Gulf South Conference victory Tuesday night, sweeping Trevecca Nazarene, 3-0, inside Central State Bank Arena. The Falcons improved to 18-7 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while the Trojans fell to 13-12 overall and 10-5 in the GSC. Montevallo avenged its earlier loss to Trevecca with set victories of 28-26, 25-18 and 25-22.

Trevecca jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening set and extended its advantage to 14-4 before Montevallo began to battle back. The Falcons chipped away at the deficit, eventually pulling within two at 18-16. Trailing 23-20 late in the set, Montevallo rallied for four consecutive points, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Katie Wilkerson, to take a 24-23 lead. The Trojans responded and earned set point at 25-24, but the Falcons answered to regain control. Wilkerson delivered consecutive Montevallo kills down the stretch, and a Trevecca attack error secured the 28-26 opening-set victory.

Montevallo carried that momentum into the second set, jumping ahead 4-2 before a six-point run behind the serving of Mae Mae Beatty extended the lead to 12-3. Beatty recorded back-to-back service aces during the run, helping the Falcons establish control. Trevecca attempted to rally, cutting the deficit to 13-8, but Montevallo maintained its advantage behind kills from Mallory Hulsey, Ellie Scharlow and Eliza Tyrrell. A kill from Ellise Hanson and a solo block from Wilkerson sealed the 25-18 victory, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Falcons opened the third set with a 5-1 advantage behind three early kills from Wilkerson. Trevecca responded with a run of its own, taking an 11-8 lead following consecutive service aces. Montevallo battled back to tie the set at 14-14 before the teams exchanged points throughout the middle of the frame. With the score tied at 19, the Falcons regained the lead on a Trevecca attack error before a service ace from Blakeley Robbins made it 21-19. The Trojans evened the score at 21, but Wilkerson delivered another kill to put Montevallo back in front. The Falcons extended their lead to 24-21 before Tyrrell delivered the match-winning kill to complete the sweep, 25-22.

Wilkerson was named Player of the Match after recording a match-high 17 kills on a .438 hitting percentage while adding one solo block.
