MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo volleyball bounced back from Friday night's loss with a 3-1 win over Mississippi Christian on Saturday afternoon.
The opening set of the game saw both sides denying a large lead for either team with the score 8-8 behind a pair of kills from
Katie Wilkerson. MC would go ahead 13-10 later in the set but a 9-1 run from Montevallo behind four errors from the Lady Choctaws and a pair of kills from
Eliza Tyrrell gave the Falcons a 19-14 lead. A kill from freshman
Ellie Scharlow forced set point before another MC error gave Montevallo a 25-22 win in the opening set.
The second set mirrored the opening of the first with neither side leading by more than just a few points before MC used a 5-1 run to take an 11-8 lead early. Montevallo responded with a pair of kills to regain control 12-11. Montevallo would then go on a 9-3 scoring run late in the set to go up 23-17 with Tyrrell leading the Falcon attack with three kills in the run. The Lady Choctaws responded by knotting the score at 23-23 after going on a six-point tear. Montevallo would see set point off an MC error where Scharlow would tally the final kill of the set to give Montevallo a 25-23 set two win.
Early in the second, Mississippi Christian gained control early to jump out to an 11-4 lead. Back-to-back aces from Scharlow following a Wilkerson kill cut the lead down to 15-11 midway through the first set. A late run from Montevallo looked to turn the tide but MC would take the third set 25-17 after ending the set on a three-point run.
Blakeley Robbins opened the fourth with back-to-back aces before a third from Scharlow gave UM a 5-2 lead early. The Falcons would stretch the lead to 11-6 after a pair of kills from Scharlow and
Mallory Hulsey. Mississippi Christian wouldn't back down and would cut the lead down to 16-14 midway through the fourth. Montevallo then tallied a 7-1 scoring streak behind five kills and an ace from the Falcons to force game point at 24-16. MC looked to spark a comeback but
Katie Wilkerson closed the door with her 16
th kill of the day to give Montevallo a 3-1 win.
