MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's lacrosse fell to Young Harris, 14-13, Saturday morning at their home opener.
Montevallo struck first with
Kennedy Goddard finding the back of the net at the 12:45 mark of the opening quarter.
Claire Withington followed less than two minutes later with a goal off an assist from
Gencie Coan to give the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage. Young Harris responded with three straight goals to close out the first quarter and take a 3-2 lead into the second.
After a defensive battle to open the second,
Ellery Shearer evened the score at 3-3 with 3:15 remaining in the half on an assist from Withington. Goddard added her second goal of the day just over a minute later before Withington capitalized again in the final minute to send Montevallo into the break with a 5-3 lead.
Young Harris opened the third quarter with a goal to trim the lead to one, but
Bridget Quayle answered with an unassisted goal at the 11:10 mark.
Asha Jamieson converted on a man up opportunity off a Shearer assist to extend the lead to 7-4. The Mountain Lions continued to battle back, but goals from
Chloe Norman and
Amber Lynch helped Montevallo maintain a 9-6 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter featured a back-and-forth offensive showcase. Young Harris scored two quick goals to cut the lead to 9-8 before Shearer netted another goal to push the Falcons back in front by two. After another Young Harris score, Shearer struck again off a Coan assist to make it 11-9. The Mountain Lions answered with three straight goals to regain the lead, but Coan finished a feed from
Mikaela Barbieri to tie the contest at 12-12 with 4:29 remaining. After Young Harris took a 13-12 advantage, Shearer completed her four-goal performance with 1:13 left on the clock off another Barbieri assist to knot the game at 13-13. Young Harris found the game-winner in the final minute to secure the 14-13 victory.
