MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo women's lacrosse dropped a heartbreaking 15-14 overtime decision to Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon at home.
Emmanuel opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the contest, but
Bridget Quayle answered 4 seconds later with an unassisted goal to even the score at 1-1.
Claire Withington and
Amber Lynch followed with back-to-back goals to give Montevallo a 3-1 advantage midway through the first quarter. The Lions responded with two late goals to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the second.
Montevallo regained control in the second quarter. Withington connected off an assist from
Chloe Norman, and Lynch added two straight goals, one assisted by
Mikaela Barbieri and another from
Carsyn Tinney, to push the Falcons ahead 6-3. Emmanuel answered with a 3-0 run to even the contest at 6-6, but Norman capitalized in the final seconds of the half off a Withington assist to send Montevallo into the break with a 7-6 lead.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the third quarter.
Asha Jamieson gave the Falcons an early spark with an unassisted goal, but Emmanuel countered with three consecutive scores to take a 9-8 advantage. Withington added another goal to the board, and Quayle added her second goal of the afternoon to keep Montevallo within striking distance as the Lions carried a slim 10-9 lead late in the period.
In the fourth, Jamieson netted a man-up goal off a Barbieri assist to give Montevallo an 11-10 edge. After Emmanuel answered with two straight scores,
Chloe Norman responded with a man-up goal to tie the game at 12-12. Withington struck again at the 9:43 mark to put the Falcons ahead 13-12, and
Ellery Shearer added a free-position goal with 3:59 remaining to give Montevallo a 14-13 lead. Emmanuel found the equalizer with 2:40 left to force overtime tied at 14-14.
In the extra period, Emmanuel converted on a man-up opportunity with 3:11 remaining to secure the 15-14 victory.
