Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team fell to West Alabama, 71-50, inside of Pruitt Hall on Thursday evening.
Elyse Hughes led the way, with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while also adding nine boards and five assists. Carlyn Burdette added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
West Alabama opened the game with a three-pointer, before Emily Mouser scored the first UM field goal at 9:24. The Tigers scored the next five points, before Kylee Norman cashed in on a lay-in, as UWA held an early, 8-4, lead at 6:50. Elyse Hughes and Carlyn Burdette added baskets in the next few minutes, as the Tigers held on to its four point advantage, 13-9, with 1:48 left in the opening quarter. West Alabama hit a pair of buckets to stretch its lead out to nine, but Norman cashed in on a driving lay-in in the final seconds, as the Tigers led, 18-11, at the end of one.
Hughes opened the second quarter strong, scoring the first three Montevallo baskets, as the Tigers led, 24-17. Mouser added a bucket, but the Tigers outscored the Falcons 8-2 to take a double-digit lead, 32-19, at the 5:08 mark. The Falcons began to cut into the UWA lead, as baskets from Audrey Hendrix, Hughes, and Julia Susla, cut the deficit to six points, 35-29, with 2:05 left in the half. The Tigers closed the second quarter with back-to-back baskets to take a, 39-29, advantage at the break.
The Tigers opened the second half with back-to-back baskets, before Mouser scored the first Falcon field goal at 6:46. Carlyn Burdette added a lay-in two minutes later, as Montevallo trailed, 48-33, at the 4:59 mark. The Tigers closed the quarter with a 9-0 run to take a, 57-33, lead into the fourth.
Susla ended the Montevallo scoring draught, draining a three-pointer at 7:39. Hendrix drained a triple of her own and Burdette hit back-to-back baskets, as the Falcons trimmed the UWA lead to, 61-43, with 5:03 left in the game. Hughes, Burdette, and Richardson added points for Montevallo in the final minutes, but West Alabama ultimately took home the, 71-50, victory.
