Falcons Host West Florida and Valdosta State to Close Regular Season

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's basketball closes the regular season with a pair of home games against West Florida and Valdosta State.

With just two games left in the regular season, Montevallo holds a 19-7 overall record and a 15-5 mark in Gulf South Conference play after posting a 3-2 record in the nonconference slate to open the season. Montevallo recorded a 4-2 start to conference action after falling to Lee and Union but picking up four-straight wins over Trevecca Nazarene, Delta State, Mississippi College, and Christian Brothers in December. The Falcons returned from the holiday break for a pair of wins over Auburn Montgomery and Alabama Huntsville in early January before dropping a home meeting with GSC regular-season champion West Alabama on Jan. 10. Following a road loss to Valdosta State on Jan. 15, Montevallo went on an eight-game win streak sparked by a 97-87 win over West Florida on Jan. 17. The Falcons returned home for a 26-point win over TNU and a five-point win over Lee on Jan. 22 and 24, respectively. UM closed January with a pair of road wins over Mississippi College and Delta State before hosted Union for a 97-63 win on Feb. 5. Feb. 7 saw the Falcons pick up a 75-66 win over CBU before heading out on the road for a 73-60 win over AUM on Feb. 14. The Falcons fell to No. 13 West Alabama, 66-54, on Thursday, Feb. 19 before adding an 84-60 win over UAH on Feb. 21.
 
Montevallo averages 78.3 points per game on a 46.7-percent shooting mark while also shooting 35.7 percent from three and 75.7 percent from the line. The Falcons have posted an average of 36.6 rebounds per game with 9.0 offensive boards per game while adding an average of 15.27 assists per game for a 1.27 assist-to-turnover ratio. Defensively, Montevallo allows just 68.3 points per game on GSC-bests 39.9-percent shooting mark and 30.3 percent from deep. The Falcons rank second in the GSC with an average of 8.92 steals per game while forcing an average of 13.6 turnovers per game.
 
Derek Moore ranks third in the GSC with an average of 17.9 points per game on a GSC-high 61.7-percent shooting while adding an average of 6.9 rebounds per game. Brandon Fussell ranks seventh in the league with an average of 16.7 points per game while shooting 44.2 percent from the floor and 36.7-percent from deep while ranking second in the league with an average of 5.4 assists per game and a GSC-leading 2.0 steals per game. Jaylen Curry ranks third on the team with 12.9 points per game while shooting 49.2 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the line while adding 5.3 rebounds per game.
 
West Florida heads into the Wednesday's meeting with a 21-7 overall record and a 14-6 mark in conference play after opening the season with a 6-1 record in nonconference action. The Argos fell in its first two GSC games of the year with losses against UAH and UWA before sparking an eight-game win streak with a 107-104 win over Valdosta State on Dec. 13. UWF adding road wins at Lee and TNU before hosting Delta State for an 85-78 win and Mississippi College for a 90-77 victory in early January. The Argos continued the streak with road wins at CBU and Union before topping AUM, 101-71, on Jan. 15. The Argos fell to Montevallo on Jan. 17, 97-87, before topping West Alabama, 78-75 on Jan. 22. The Argos picked up a road win over UAH on Jan. 23 before falling to VSU and TNU in back-to-back outings. UWF returned to the win column with a 68-64 home win over Lee before heading to Mississippi for wins over DSU and MC. Union topped the Argos, 85-69, on Feb. 19 before UWF defeated CBU, 71-61, in its most recent outing.
 
West Florida ranks second in the GSC with an average of 86.1 points per game on a GSC-high 48.4 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from long range. The Argos average 37.7 rebounds per game with 11.3 offensive board while adding 13.64 assists per game through 28 games. Defensively, West Florida allows 74.2 points per game on a 42.6-percent shooting mark while averaging 8.21 steals and forcing 13.3 turnovers per game for a 2.61 turnover margin. West Florida also ranks second in the league with an average of 3.46 blocks per game.
 
Anthony Igiede leads UWF with an average of 16.2 points per game on a 44.8-percent clip from the floor while adding a 42.7-percent mark from deep and posting an average of 4.5 rebounds per game. Aric Demings ranks second on the team with an average of 14.2 points per game while shooting 49.8-percent from the floor and adding an average of 3.7 assists per game. Elijah Wyche adds an average of 13.7 points per game on a 48.3-percent mark from the floor while adding and average of 6.3 rebounds per game.
 
Valdosta State heads into the weekend with a 17-9 overall record and a 12-8 mark in conference play after opening the season with a 4-1 nonconference record before opening the conference slate with a loss to West Alabama and a win over UAH. The Blazers then went on a four-game skid with losses against UWF, TNU, Lee and MC before returning to the win column with a 90-72 home win over Delta State on Jan. 4. VSU then picked up a 103-101 win over Union on the road before topping CBU on Jan. 10. The Blazers added a pair of home wins over Montevallo and AUM in mid-January before falling to UAH and UWA in back-to-back rod games. VSU defeated West Florida, 103-100, on Jan. 31 to spark a five-game win streak that featured wins over Lee, TNUE, DSU, and MC before the Blazers fell to CBU, 89-70, on Feb. 19.  Most recently, VSU picked up a 93-79 win over Union on Feb. 21.
 
Valdosta State leads the GSC with an average of 93.1 points per game on a 47.1-percent shooting mark while shooting 34.6 percent from long range and 75.9 percent from the stripe. On the glass, VSU averages 39.5 rebounds per game with a league-high 14.3 offensive boards while posting a 1.35 assist-to-turnover ratio with 15.77 assists per game. Defensively, VSU allows 87.8 points per game on a 46.7-percent shooting mark while allowing 39.6 rebounds per game. The Blazers force an average of 15.4 turnovers per game on a league-high 9.00 steals per game mark.
 
Drew Mills leads VSU with an average of 18.5 points per game on a 52.1-percent shooting clip while adding 5.7 rebounds per game with Blaise Wallace averaging 13.7 points on a team-high 9.2 rebounds. Peter McKey is third on the squad with 12.0 points per game on a 46.3-percent shooting mark while adding 3.2 rebounds per game. Lucas Brown Jr. rounds out the Blazers' double-digit scorers with 11.5 points per game while adding 4.8 rebounds per game.
