Falcons Close Season Against Valdosta State on Senior Day

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team closed the 2025-26 season on Friday evening, falling to Valdosta State, 72-54, inside of Central State Bank Arena. Montevallo honored seniors Mary Cartee, Elyse Hughes, Sidney Jones, and Jerrilyn Richardson before today's contest.

Emily Mouser led the way with 20 points, as she shot an efficient 7-for-10 from the floor. Elyse Hughes recorded ten points and seven rebounds.

Mouser scored the first Falcon field goal of the day, cashing in on a lay-in at 8:36. Mouser added a triple one minute later, but a VSU 8-0 run put the Blazers ahead, 11-5, at the 6:12 mark. Mouser hit a pair of free throws to halt the run, but the Blazers continued to push, using an 8-0 run to stretch its lead out to, 19-7, with 2:30 left in the first. Carlyn Burdette hit a pair of three pointers in the final two minutes, as VSU held on to a, 23-13, advantage at the end of one.

Owens hit the first Falcon field goal of the second at 8:27, but the Blazers opened the quarter on a 6-2 run, as VSU led, 29-15, at the 7:05 mark. Hughes added a jumper in the next minute, as the Blazers took a, 31-17, lead at 4:59. Montevallo's lone field goal in the final five minutes of the half came from Mouser and the Falcons added free throws from Mouser, Jerrilyn Richardson, and Carlyn Burdette, as VSU led, 38-24, at the break.

A VSU lay-in opened the second half, before Mouser responded with back-to-back baskets for Montevallo. After a VSU jumper, Alani Owens and Julia Susla connected on a pair of three pointers, to cut the Blazer lead to single digits, 42-34, at the 3:38 mark. London Robinson added three points in the next minute and a half, as the Blazers led, 46-37, with 49 seconds left. Hughes closed the quarter strong, connecting on an and-one, cutting the deficit to six points, 46-40, at the end of the third.

Hughes and Mouser hit jumpers in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Blazers held on to its six-point advantage, 50-44, at the 8:43 mark.  A crucial 10-0 run gave the Blazers a commanding, 60-44, lead at 6:02. The Falcons continued to fight as seniors, Sidney Jones and Mary Cartee scored points down the stretch and Hughes hit her first three-pointer of the season. The Blazers ultimately took home a, 72-54, victory.
