GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Montevallo wrestling team posted a strong showing at the NCAA Super Region II Championships on Saturday, scoring 114 team points to finish fourth overall with eight total placers. NWCA No. 9 Cole Hunt led the Falcons with a super regional title at 125 pounds, while Carson Freeman (157) and Jake Chisolm (165) also earned national qualifier status with third-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Hunt recorded two falls before defeating Emmanuel's Braydon Mitchell to reach the title bout. The Sugar Valley, Ga., native then defeated No. 14 Ricky Springs of Newberry 9-6 to secure the championship.
Freeman claimed his first trip to the NCAA National Championships with a 4-1 performance, culminating in a 4-2 decision over No. 14 Keegan Roberson of UNC Pembroke. Freeman also defeated King's Joe Bertrand (10-4), Newberry's Matt Hoelke (6-1), and earned a 19-3 technical fall over Emmanuel's Qusai Marini.
Chisolm secured his second consecutive national berth with a 4-1 day. He opened with a pin of Coker's Matthew Williams, followed by a 5-4 decision over King's Sayfore Sieh. After a dominant technical fall in the third-place match, Chisolm sealed his spot with a last-second takedown of UNCP's No. 15 Caleb Grau.
Kaden Brown notched three victories on the day, including two pins, en route to a fifth-place finish at 141 pounds. No. 15 Max Stedeford posted technical falls over Coker's Frank Bianco and Allen's Quincy Gash, then earned a fall over UNC Pembroke's Avery Buonocore as he finished fourth at 149.
Aiden Knight placed fifth at 174 pounds with four wins, while Jeffery Tubbs went 3-2 to secure fourth at 184. Willie Cox earned a technical fall and a major decision to finish fifth at 285 pounds.
UP NEXT: Hunt, Freeman, and Chisolm are set to compete at the NCAA National Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., on March 13-14.
