TAMPA, Fla. – The Montevallo baseball team closed out its weekend in Tampa with an 11-1 loss to No. 1 Tampa on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game series at Tampa Baseball Field.
Tampa opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, using a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's first run and take a 1-0 lead. The hosts plated two additional runs on an RBI single in the third to push the advantage to three heading into the middle innings.
The Falcons responded in the top of the fourth inning to get on the board. After putting a runner in scoring position, Ian Cartwright delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Jack Fitzgerald to score, trimming the deficit to 3-1. Tampa answered right away in the bottom half of the inning, however, as a solo home run restored the three-run cushion.
Tampa widened the gap in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single to make it a 6-1 contest. The Spartans then put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring five runs in the frame to secure the series finale.
