MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's and women's tennis teams are set for a pair of weekend matchups, beginning with a trip to NAIA opponent Tennessee Southern on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Falcons then return home to celebrate Senior Day against Spring Hill on Saturday, with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Both Falcon teams fell to No. 2 West Florida last Saturday and will look to bounce back in non-conference action this weekend. Despite the setbacks, Klara Podskubkova picked up a win over then-No. 4 Carlota Verdu, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, in singles play, helping her earn a No. 57 ranking in this week's ITA singles rankings.
On the men's side, the duo of Guilherme Gracioli and Simon Luigs defeated No. 22 Rafael Sabio and Goncalo Quintela, 6-4, in doubles play, moving up from No. 47 to No. 21 in this week's rankings.
The UT Southern women enter the match with a 1-12 record and are coming off a 4-3 exhibition victory over Itawamba Community College. Agota Juozapaviciute leads the Firehawks with a pair of singles wins while also holding a team-best three victories in doubles play.
The UT Southern men enter with a 5-7 overall record and are ranked No. 24 in the NAIA by the ITA. They dropped a 5-2 decision to Itawamba Community College last Thursday in exhibition action. Luis Guilherme Cupertino de Santana, Gaspar Audasio, Ryosuke Furuya, and Ayden Kousis lead the Firehawks with five singles wins each. The doubles team of Furuya and Audasio leads the way with a 6-4 record, including a 6-3 mark at the No. 3 spot.
Spring Hill's women's team enters with a 6-3 record, including a 5-1 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Badgers' men bring a 6-5 overall record and a 5-1 SIAC mark into the weekend. Spring Hill split matches against Tuskegee and LeMoyne-Owen in their last outing on Feb. 28.
MATCH NOTES
- The Falcon men are 5-1 all-time against Spring Hill and will face UT Southern for the first time.
- The UM women hold a perfect 8-0 record against the Badgers and will also meet UT Southern for the first time in program history.
