Montevallo Drops Heartbreaker at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Montevallo women's lacrosse falls on the road at Belmont Abbey, 14-13, in the closing seconds.
 
Belmont Abbey struck first to take a 1-0 lead at the 12:34 mark before the Crusaders pushed the lead to 2-0 with a man-up goal eight minutes in. Claire Withington broke the ice for the Falcons with a free-position goal to cut the lead in half. Kennedy Goddard found the back of then at the 1:29 mark of the first to send the game to the second in a 2-2 tie.
 
Asha Jamieson broke the tie just 37 seconds into the second quarter to give Montevallo its first lead of the afternoon. A minute after Ashlei Piazza's third save of the game, BAC scored three-straight goals to go up 5-3 with 9:43 on the clock. Ellery Shearer ended the run with a free-position goal to trim the lead back to one before BAC took advantage of a Montevallo card to stretch the lead to 6-4. After Belmont Abbey pushed the lead to 7-4, Ally Rich scored on an assist from Shearer to make the score 7-5 with 1:52 left in the half. BAC closed the half with an eighth goal to take an 8-5 lead into the half.
 
Out of the break, Piazza added a pair of saves while Shearer scored her third of the day to bring the Falcons back within two at the 11:04 mark. Just a few minutes later, Withington answered a BAC goal to make the score 9-7 with 7:29 remaining. Belmont Abbey stretched its lead back to three at the 5:54 mark before Piazza added another pair of saves. With both offenses scoreless in the final six minutes of the third, the game went to the fourth with BAC leading 10-7.
 
Rich scored her second of the day to open the fourth quarter before BAC made the score 11-8 with 11:38 on the clock. Rich completed the hat trick at the 10:51 mark with an assist from Hannah Rudge before the Crusaders moved the lead back to three at the 8:54 mark. Jamieson tallied back-to-back goals for the Falcons to bring Montevallo within two at 13-11 with 5:14 to play. Following a Rudge goal that cut the lead to one, Jamieson tied the game at 13-13 with just 3:50 to play. In the final seconds, Belmont Abbey scored the game winner to take a 14-13 win over Montevallo.
