MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo Women's Lacrosse team opened conference play with a dominant 20-4 victory over Virginia State Monday evening. The matchup marked the first ever meeting between the two teams.
Montevallo wasted no time setting the tone, as
Claire Withington scored back-to-back goals in the opening minutes to give the Falcons an early 2-0 lead. Withington completed a first-quarter hat trick before
Carsyn Tinney and
Asha Jamieson added to the scoring run. Virginia State got on the board midway through the quarter. Kennedy Goodard added a free-position goal in the final seconds to give Montevallo a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first.
The Falcons continued their momentum into the second quarter, opening with a goal from Goddard off an assist from
Chloe Norman. Montevallo's offense stayed aggressive, scoring seven goals in the frame, including two more from Jamieson and a pair from
Ally Rich, along with one from
Bridget Quayle and
Chloe Norman to end the quarter 13-1 going into halftime.
Montevallo remained in control as Withington tallied two more goals in the third, while
Hannah Rudge and
Bridget Quayle each found the back of the net. Virginia State added their second goal of the game, but the Falcons extended their lead to 17-2 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Goddard opened the scoring before Virginia State capitalized on a free-position opportunity. Montevallo answered with goals from
Ariyah Ellis and
Mikaela Barbieri. Virginia state added a late goal in the final seconds, but the Falcons secured the 20-4 win in their conference opener.
