#24 Bobcats Use Late Runs to Down Falcons

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (18-22, 6-14 PBC) suffered two come from behind losses to #24 Georgia College (27-14, 11-9 PBC) in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader. The Falcons fell in game one 15-9 and lost the nightcap 8-7. UM led 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth in game one and the Bobcats used 12 runs to storm by the Falcons late in the game. UM then led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth in the second game but the Bobcats once again used four runs in the final inning to take a 8-7 victory.

The Falcons were led at the plate by senior Scott Deason (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) who was 5-for-10 on the day with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Justin Burgess (Tampa, Fla./The First Academy) was 3-for-7 with a double and three run scored. Junior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Central) and freshman Will Fulmer (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) led the Falcons in RBI with four each. Peterson had an all-around day as he was 3-for-9 with three runs scored, a double, a triple, a homerun and a walk. Fulmer was 2-for-8 with a run scored and his four RBI.

Junior Chris Ross (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) also had three hits as he was 3-for-10 with three runs scored and a double. Freshman Pablo Martell (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) chipped in three RBI off of two hits including a triple. Sophomore Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham) was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

On the mound sophomore Will Dismukes (Montgomery, Ala./Autauga Academy) got the start in game one. He went 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and four walks. He allowed five runs off of seven hits. Junior Brett Roney (Wetumpka, Ala./Wetumpka) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed three runs off of two hits and a walk without gaining an out. His record fell to 2-1 on the season. Three Falcon pitchers split the final four innings while giving up seven runs.

Senior Kyle Butler (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern) started game two pitching 7.0 innings while striking out two and walking a pair. He scattered six hits and allowed four runs including three earned. He left the game with the Falcons ahead 7-4. Junior Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) pitched the next inning while allowing one run on one hit. The final pitcher for the Falcons was Deason who allowed three runs off of three hits and one walk. He did not record an out as his record fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Falcons broke out early in game one as they scored three runs in the very first inning. Ross opened up the game with a single and was followed by a double from Dubberly. Ross scored on a passed ball and then Dubberly scored on an RBI groundout by Fulmer. Peterson stepped up with a triple to right field and was eventually brought home on a two-out single from Deason.

The Bobcats scored a single run in the bottom half but UM matched it with a solo run of its own in the second. Dubberly drove in the Falcon's fourth run of the game in his second at bat as Burgess scored on a two-out single to left field.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut UM's lead to just one. The Falcons matched the two runs in the fifth as Peterson and junior Blaine Rosenberg (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain) had back-to-back RBI doubles.

Georgia College took control of the game in the bottom of the fifth as they scored five runs off of five hits to take an 8-6 lead. GC added two runs in the sixth and five more runs in the seventh to open up a 15-6 lead. The Falcons had one last blast of offense in the eighth as they scored three runs. Fulmer picked up an RBI on a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the inning. Peterson then drove in a run on a fielder's choice. The final run scored on an error by the third baseman which plated Martell.

In game two neither team scored in the opening two innings. UM finally broke through in the third as Ross scored on an RBI groundout from Fulmer. Georgia College also woke up in the third as the Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bobcats added another run in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. UM cut into the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs off a two-run, two-out homerun from Peterson.

UM eventually tied the game in the seventh as Fulmer hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Deason. The Falcons picked up their second lead of the game off of one big hit as Martell hit a bases loaded triple to right center to give UM a 7-4 lead.

The Falcons were unable to hold that lead as the Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to take a 8-7 victory.

The Falcons will return to action Sunday, April 17 at 12 p.m. as they continue their series with #24 Georgia College.
