MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (18-23, 6-15 PBC) suffered its fourth Peach Belt Conference series sweep of the season with a 9-5 loss at #24 Georgia College (28-14, 12-9 PBC). The loss officially knocks the Falcons out of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament race. UM was led by freshman Will Fulmer (Palm Harbor, Fla./East Lake) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Junior Heath Peterson (Phenix City, Ala./Central) and senior Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) led the team in RBI with two each.
Peterson was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Dabbs was 1-for-5 with two RBI. Freshman Pablo Martell (Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) was the only other Falcon with more than one hit as he was 2-for-5 at the plate.
Freshman Alex Guilford (Montgomery, Ala./Alabama Christian Academy) took the mound for the Falcons as he went 4.0 innings with a strikeout, a walk and six runs given up. Four of the six runs were earned. Guilford took home the loss as his record fell to 4-3 on the season. Four Falcons split the final four innings with each pitching one inning. Junior Wes Rich (Pelham, Ala./Pelham) and freshman Edward Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) did not allow a hit in their innings while sophomore Devon Davis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) allowed just one hit in his inning.
Georgia College got the scoring going early as the Bobcats scored six runs over the first four innings. UM finally got on the board in the fifth as Peterson hit an RBI double followed by a two RBI single from Dabbs to cut the lead to three runs.
The Bobcats answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the sixth to up their leads back to six.
UM's final runs came in the eighth as Fulmer and Peterson each hit RBI singles to give the Falcons five total runs.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, April 20 at 1 p.m. as they travel to the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
