MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Taylor Beverly scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Falcons to a 60-55 win over visiting Georgia Southwestern as they picked up their second victory in Peach Belt Conference play Jan. 15 at Trustmark Arena.
Beverly, who also registered a game-high six blocked shots, finished 9-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-9 at the charity stripe while posting her ninth double-double of the season.
Sophomore Jacquelyn Thompson added 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Fellow sophomore Jasmine Thomas added 12 points and six rebounds for the Falcons, who improved to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in Peach Belt Conference.
Senior Shay Bonner added three points and seven rebounds, while junior Kaylin Foreman, sophomore Katie Colson and freshmen Bre'ana Singleton and Shelby Williams contributed two points each.
Danyelle Jones drained a 3-pointer to give the Hurricanes an early 13-7 lead with 13:52 remaining in the first half. Shatoria Hudson knocked down a jumper with 5:58 left in the first half to give Georgia Southwestern a 26-16 lead, its largest in the game.
Thomas drained a jumper with 1:45 left in the opening half, which sent the teams into the locker room tied at 28-28 following a 12-2 run by the Falcons to end the half.
Montevallo opened the second half with a 15-3 run, capped with a jumper by Foreman with 12:56 remaining in the game, which gave the Falcons their largest lead in the game at 43-31.
Jasmine McSwain drained a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 60-55, but it was too late for the Hurricanes to make it a one-possession game.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 18 with a Peach Belt Conference contest on the road at Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C.
