Chapman Adds Deshawn Montgomery to Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo Head Women's Basketball Coach Olivia Chapman has announced the hiring of Deshawn Montgomery as the Falcons' Assistant Women's Basketball Coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Montgomery joins the Montevallo coaching staff after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State, where he assisted with player skill development, game film analysis, opponent scouting reports and recruiting while helping manage team operations. His responsibilities also included conducting unofficial campus visits, evaluating prospects at AAU events and serving as a practice player to simulate game situations during practices.

During his time at Jacksonville State, Montgomery helped the Gamecocks make strides as new members of Conference USA. Last season, the program earned its first ever Conference USA Tournament victory with a double-overtime win over UTEP. Montgomery helped coach multiple All-Conference performers, including 2024-25 Conference USA Sixth Player of the Year, Clara Gonzalez Planella and 2025-26 Second Team and All-Defensive team performer Mya Barnes.

Prior to Jacksonville State, Montgomery served as a student manager at Southern Miss under Hall of Fame head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. At Southern Miss, he assisted with scout team drills, practice setup, equipment organization and team travel. The Lady Eagles captured a share of the Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship during the 2022-23 season and advanced to the third round of the WNIT in 2023-24.

Montgomery also gained experience as a strength and conditioning intern at Southern Miss, assisting with training sessions for multiple athletic programs, and worked as a student athletic trainer during his time at Itawamba Community College and Southern Miss.

A native of Shannon, Miss., Montgomery graduated from Shannon High School in 2020 before attending Itawamba Community College, where he earned an associate degree. He later earned a bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Southern Miss and completed a master's degree in sports management at Jacksonville State.
