Falcons fall to conference leading Nighthawks

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Impressive scoring performances by Taylor Beverly and Jacquelyn Thompson were not enough for the University of Montevallo on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons fell to the conference leading Nighthawks of North Georgia by the final score of 77-65.

Beverly, the conference's leading scorer, squared off with North Georgia's Mimi Hill, the second-leading scorer in the PBC.

North Georgia put together a solid first half, shooting over 50% from the field. The Nighthawks were led by Hill, who put up 16 points in the first 20 minutes. She shot 7-9 from the field.

Her strong performance was matched by the Montevallo's prolific offensive duo of Beverly and Thompson. Combined, the pair scored 20 of the team's 26 first half points.

In the second half, a Carrington Caise layup cut the lead Nighthawk lead to six points with 13:35 left in regulation.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, this would be as close as they would come to taking over the lead.

When the final buzzer sounded, North Georgia secured their conference best ninth Peach Belt victory, defeating Montevallo 77-65.

The Falcon attack was lead by Thompson, who had a historic afternoon shooting the ball. The sophomore tied for the third most made three-pointers in one game in school history, sinking seven long range shots. Overall, Thompson had 27 points on 58.8% shooting.

Beverly was not far behind, scoring 24 points. She also tied for the team led in rebounds with Katie Colson, recording eight boards.

The biggest difference in the game came at the free throw line. Montevallo only took four trips to the free throw line, making two. On the other hand, North Georgia got to the line 27 times.

Overall, 25 fouls were called on the Falcons, while only 14 were called on the Nighthawks.

Montevallo stays on the road for their next game. They travel to Georgia College on Wednesday, February 5th.

Their game with the Bobcats will tip-off at 4:30 p.m.
