AMERICUS, Ga. – Taylor Beverly's 13th double-double of the season led the University of Montevallo women's basketball team to a 66-59 road victory over Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern.
The Falcons never trailed the Hurricanes in Wednesday night's contest, controlling the tempo from the opening tip. At the second media timeout, Beverly had scored 80% of the team's points, and the Falcons held a six point lead over the Hurricanes.
Montevallo maintained their lead the rest of the half, but were never able to pull away from Georgia Southwestern and led by seven, 27-20, at halftime.
To start the second 20 minutes, the Falcons were able to put some distance between themselves and the Hurricanes, opening the half on a 17-4 run. With 13:32 remaining in regulation, the Falcons had a 44-24 lead.
Georgia Southwestern showed a lot of fight in the latter part of the second half, but the outcome was never truly in doubt. When the final horn sounded, Montevallo had earned a road conference win, and a season sweep of Georgia Southwestern, 66-59.
Beverly led the way for the Falcons in most statistical categories. The junior from Brandon, Mississippi earned her 13th double-double of the year with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She also had four blocks and two steals.
Right behind Beverly was sophomore Jasmine Thomas. Thomas recorded a career high 13 points. Her previous highest scoring game also came this season against Georgia Southwestern; she scored 12 points in a January 15th matchup at Trustmark Arena.
Katie Colson added seven points and 10 rebounds in 39 minutes for the Falcons, and Bre'ana Singleton led the team with six assists.
Montevallo will look for another road win this Saturday, February 15th, when they visit Peach Belt powerhouse Clayton State.
